St. Augustine (354-430), Bishop of Hippo, speaks to the individualism of our age which holds that every one must live for himself and satisfy her own needs above all, regardless of the expectations of the Bible and the Judaeo-Christian culture which is based upon this Holy Book. He writes in his renowned work The City of God: "The devil would not have ensnared man in the open and manifest sin of doing what God had forbidden, had man not already begun to live for himself." The "wisdom" of our age emphasizes personal rights and happiness. There is some truth in this. The concern for human rights seems to have done a great deal of good in our time. One may point out the fall of dictatorships and tyrannical regimes such as the Soviet Union – a prominent example! And personal happiness – the right to pursue it formed the basis of the most powerful country on earth: the United States of America. However it does not appear that happiness has been achieved on a very wide scale – if at all - in the United States (and planet Earth!) which continues to be plagued by all sorts of challenges including terrorism. The lands which used to form the Soviet Union have similarly not found that the freedom they achieved has given them much in the way of improving their daily life-style. One may rightly ask what it is that gives terrorists their motivation to destroy and kill. In the name of what? Is it not happiness? The "happiness" of feeling that one is dying in a just cause perhaps? What sort of justice is it, however, that does not include the happiness of innocent victims? It may be that terrorists and those who proclaim the ideals of individual rights and happiness may be in the same predicament. These things are just not being realized. The world is getting less happy. Personal rights are becoming less and less certain. Living for oneself rather than living for God and others has placed us all upon the slippery slope that leads into the abyss of chaos and darkness. The desire to live for oneself. St. Augustine writes: "It was this that made him (them – Adam and Eve - IGK) listen with pleasure to the words, 'Ye shall be as gods'". He says that this is something "which they would much more readily have accomplished by obediently adhering to their supreme and true end than by proudly living to themselves." After all God did create us to be like Him. However, listen further. Augustine writes: "For created gods are gods not by virtue of what is in themselves, but by a participation (in the Life – IGK) of the true God." We do not live only to and for ourselves. We live for and in the One Whose Life we share. And that includes the others who also share that Life. Augustine concludes his thought with the words "By craving to be more, man becomes less". How true! How much more could we be than participants in the Life of the Holy, Omnipotent, All-Wise, All-Seeing, All-Loving God? In this is joy and the fullness of life and perfection. And ultimately – true happiness! |
