SECURITY AMONG THE SHEEP
(for Saints Patrick of Ireland and Cyril of Jerusalem)

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem whose memory is celebrated the day after that of Saint Patrick of Ireland (March 18 and 17 respectively – that would be March 31 and 30 on the current Gregorian Calendar since the Julian Calendar which is used by our Ukrainian Orthodox Church is 13 days behind astronomically), exhorted his students in the Faith of Jesus: "Make your fold with the sheep; flee from the wolves”.

This was a bishop who had been dethroned three times. Among his powerful enemies were fellow bishops as well as emperors. Had he wished to preserve himself he might well have sought refuge by joining the wolves. Instead it seems that he found true security among the sheep.

Patrick was captured by “wolves” in the form of Irish raiders who took him from his native land (there is uncertainty where exactly this was: Scotland, France or elsewhere) at the age of 16 and made him a slave for 6 years until he was able to escape. One would have thought that this experience would have given him a life-long antipathy to those belonging to the folk who had so humiliated and oppressed him. On the contrary we find him returning there some 15 years later (432) as a Bishop to establish the Faith of Christ, a task at which he succeeded so well that to this day Patrick, Ireland and its people throughout the world are as closely linked as the leaves on a shamrock.

Those who follow Jesus of Nazareth do not seek the security that comes from “a big stick”. Recognizing that evil deeds will invariably bring some sort of disaster as a consequence upon those who perpetrate them, we do not seek to be the conveyors of this disaster. Rather we seek to lessen the blows by praying for the evil-doers, by placing ourselves in between the disaster and those whom it visits. We forgive – not because we minimize or excuse evil things. We forgive because we do not forget.

We remember how we have all at times been enemies of Christ by doing, saying or intending evil, false, vengeful, self-seeking things. We remember how Jesus forgave us upon the Cross. We remember how often it has happened that instead of retribution coming upon us swiftly and decisively as a result of the evil we have done, said or intended – we have been spared, forgiven, consoled, healed, re-directed.

It is a joy to be a lamb in the arms of the Good Shepherd – even (or especially?) when He has been stern in allowing hard times to come upon us! We have learned – or are learning – the security of being among His flock. Ah yes, we are at times tempted to envy and admire the wolves – or even imitate them. They seem to be so strong, so self-assured. But God is merciful. And as He so manifestly showed in the lives of Patrick of Ireland and Cyril of Jerusalem, lasting and truly satisfying victories are won by love and generosity, not retributive malice and coercion.

Архимандрит Софроній (Сахаров), який передав світові науку афонського старця Препдобного Силуана пише: „Христос є Світлом для світу. Він показав нам і Отця Небесного і те, ким є людина. Без Нього ми б мали дуже мало справжньої свідомости чи то про Бога чи то про людину."

Популярний погляд на релігію каже, що вона займається якщо не виключно то головно тим, Ким є Бог і як від Нього здобути ласку та уникнути кару за наші – людські – переступи. Тут є доля правди, але тільки доля!

Справжня релігія цікавиться УСІМ, що існує та що могло б існувати! Справжня релігія не є відрізана від світу! Справжня релігія цікавиься людиною і єдина подає вірну науку про неї – бо ж тільки релігія сягає понад видимий світ п’ятьох змислів і знаходить і походження, і значіння, і майбутність людини у вічності – там де є Бог і Анголи Його.

Як це мало б бути для нас приємним почути ті чудові навчання Господа Ісуса про те, що Бог – то наш Люблячий, Прощаючий, Піклуючий Батько! Цю науку Він не тільки вчив словами але й ділами надзвичайними та славними. І завершив Своєю останньою проповіддю на землі, яку висловив тільки деякими короткими реченнями та словами з довгими перервами – страждаючи й помираючи на Хресті!

Над цією Проповіддю можна б зупинитися і думками і серцем довго-довго. Яке значіння слів: „Отче, прости їм – вони не знають, що вони роблять”? Чи дійсно так? Ми часто кажемо, що ми – тільки люди, що ми не в силі прощати, жертвувати собою, як Христос.

Христові слова і Його наука не так кажуть. Вона кажуть, що й ми можемо творити діла надзвичайні. Тільки ми про це покище тільки вчимося – ми ще того не знаємо. Наша школа – це наше життя в цьому цікавому і часто страшному світі. А наш Учитель – Той що і словом Своїм і Життям (яке знаходимо повністю у Святій Церкві) дає нам Світло, щоб ми не ходили в цій темряві напомацьки.

Це – Христос. Справжній Бог але й Справжня Людина. Чи чули? Справжня Людина. Дійсне людство вже появилося в світі в Ісусі Христі. Ними – справжніми людьми і ми покликані ставати. І станемо!

Тільки смирімся, молімся, гартуймось - а свої очі тримаймо спрямовані на приклад і науку Того, що втілив і об’явив і Божество і Людськість – на Ісуса з Назарету, нашого Провідника, нашого справжнього Друга!
