КОРМ ДЛЯ ДУШІ

Дорогі брати і сестри!

Цієї неділі ми згадуємо великих подвижників – блаженого Іоана (Волохатого), Ростовського (+р.Б. 1580) і священика Петра Угличського (+1866) – юродивих, тобто “нерозумних” заради Христа.

          Юродство - це особливо тяжкий подвиг, на який Господь кличе небагатьох обраних. Світ вважає юродивих ненормальними – бо вони поводяться так, ніби були несповна розуму. Для них не існує лицемірних умовностей суспільного життя – вони відверто викривають несправедливість і гріховність як простих людей так і владоможців. Вони не бояться бути висміяними і постраждати заради того, щоб перемогти цей лицемірний світ, що лежить у злі, і засвідчити людству цілком іншу дійсність – дійсніть добра – Царства Божого.

          Юродиві – насправді дуже розумні і духовно обдаровані люди.

“Так, сповідаючи Дивіївську юродиву Пелагею, яку на цей подвиг поблагословив преподобний Серафим Саровський, священик був глибоко зворушений її розумовою і духовною силою. Знімав з себе ризу юродства і святий Андрій Христа ради юродивий, коли вів бесіди із своїм учнем Єпифанієм, котрий пізніше став єпископом” – пише єпископ Олександр (Мілеант). 

          Подвиг юродства дозволяє цим подвижникам боротися із найбільшим гріхом, який стоїть на дорозі спасіння – гордістю. Бо вони не мають жодної власності і відрікаються від власної волі (власних інтересів і амбіцій), яка дуже часто є провідником зла.

          Для людей, засліплених плотським мудруванням, усі християни, що вірять у розп’ятого Богочоловіка – юродиві. Про самого Господа, давні книжники наважувалися казати, що “Він безумствує” (Ін.10:20).

          На допиті апостола Павла у проконсула Феста, той прямо йому сказав: “Дурієш ти, Павле! Велика наука доводить тебе до нерозуму!” (Дії 26:24).

          Отже, і ми, брати і сестри, не шукаймо лукавої псевдомудрості світу цього. Вона мине разом із цим тимчасовим світом. А мудрість Божа перебуде з нами вічно.

“Для тих, що гинуть, вість про Розп’ятого Христа – безумство, а для нас, що спасаємося, - сила Божа! Бо сказано у Писанні: “Я знищу мудрість премудрих і розум учених відкину”(1Кор.1:18-19).

Голос почувши Твого Апостола Павла, який мовить: “Ми юродиві Христа ради”, раби твої Христе Боже Іоан та Петро, юродивими стали на землі Тебе ради. Тому пам’ять їх шануючи, Тебе молимо, Господи, спаси душі наші.

1. The First Ecumenical Council decreed that the Church's year should begin on September 1st. The month of September was, for the Jews, the beginning of the civil year (see Exodus 12:2), the month of the gathering of fruits and the bringing to God of sacrifices of thanksgiving. It was at the time of this feast that the Lord Jesus went into the synagogue in Nazareth, opened the Book of the Prophet Isaiah and read the words: 'The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me; because He hath anointed Me to preach good tidings unto the meek; He hath sent Me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance' (Is. 61:1-2; cf. Luke 4:16-21). This month of September is also noted in the history of Christianity because it was during September that Constantine the Great was victorious over Maxentius, the enemy of the Christian faith, a victory followed by the granting of freedom of confession of the Christian faith throughout the whole Roman Empire. For a long time, the civil year in the Christian world was reckoned in the same way as the Church's year, from September 1st, but it was later changed to January 1st, first in western Europe and then also in Russia in the time of Peter the Great.

2. Our Holy Father Simeon Stylites was born in Syria of peasant parents. He fled from them at the age of eighteen and became a monk. He gave himself to the strictest asceticism, sometimes fasting for forty days. After that, he followed a particular ascesis, until then unknown: standing day and night on a pillar in unceasing prayer. His pillar was at first three metres high, then one of six metres was built for him, then eleven, eighteen and finally twenty. St Simeon endured innumerable assaults from demons, overcoming them all by prayer. He worked great miracles, healing the sick by his prayers and his words. People from all sides gathered around his pillar: rich and poor, kings and slaves. He helped them all, restoring bodily health to some, giving comfort and instruction to others and denouncing some for their heretical faith. The Empress Eudocia was thus turned from the Eutychian heresy back to Orthodoxy. Simeon lived in asceticism during the reigns of the Emperors Theodosius the Younger, Marcian and Leo the Great. This first Christian stylite and great wonderworker, St Simeon, lived for seventy years, and entered into rest in the Lord on September 1st, 459. His relics were taken to Antioch, to the church dedicated to his name.

of America

The date September 11 (Aug. 29, Old Style) has for centuries been a day of prayer and strict fasting for Orthodox Christians. On this day we celebrate the solemn feast of the Beheading of St. John the Forerunner and Baptist of our Lord. Now, the solemnity of this day has been compounded by the tragic terrorist attacks in the United States, on the "Twin Towers" of New York City's World Trade Center and on the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.

In a world of such diverse political and philosophical ideas, it is to be expected that people will disagree with, and even dispute, one another's ideologies. In such cases, disputes must be addressed through mature, open dialogue. In no way can we, as people bearing the name of Christ, condone the use of violence as an expression of opposition to the principles by which a people or society live. In particular, we must denounce the type of violence utilised by terrorism, involving the loss of innocent lives. The only thing more deplorable would be to attempt to support such acts of violence in the name of God.

We, the hierarchs of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada, on behalf of all the faithful of our Church, extend our deepest condolences to all those effected by these acts of terror. May the ever-merciful Lord receive those who have lost their lives into His heavenly mansion, and may His peace which surpasses all human understanding dwell in the hearts of all those who live to deal with the aftermath of these heinous events.

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. (John 14:27)
