IN MEMORIAM: POPE JOHN PAUL ІІ

“This evening or this night Christ will open the doors for the Pope”. Such were the words of Archbishop Angelo Comastri, vicar general of Vatican City, the smallest nation in the world, speaking before an audience of about 70,000 faithful gathered on St. Peter’s Square on Saturday, April 2, in Rome, to support their spiritual Father in his final earthly battle. His Holiness reposed in the Lord that very day at 2:37 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.

The greatness of this servant of God, John Paul II, Pope of Rome, may be seen from these words the Holy Father passed on with the aid of his private secretary Archbishop Stanislaw Dziwisz to his support staff just before his the crisis which ended with his repose: “I am happy – and you should be happy too. Let us pray together in joy”.

One recalls as well his approach to the man who had shot him on May 13, 1981, on that same St. Peter’s Square, Mehmet Ali Agca. Very shortly after this assassination attempt the Pope asked the faithful to pray for “my brother (Mehmet) whom I have sincerely forgiven”. Later on he visited him in prison and had a private conversation with him.

For the past week the eyes of the world were focused on the life’es end of this man, who sought with God’s help, to make his attitudes and actions consistent with his confession. The Holy Father left this world, instructing his flock and the whole world right up till his last breath – and after.

He followed the example of the Chief Pastor, our Lord Jesus Christ, Whose death upon the Cross brought the world unspeakable blessing: the faithful see in this death the end of the dominion of death, for Our Lord died “conquering death by death”. Even for those who do not believe, Jesus of Nazareth is an example of a Man who manifested the highest peak of goodness – forgiving and praying for those who did this unspeakable wrong to Him, laying the foundation for true reconciliation between human beings and for the final victory of love and goodness on this planet.

All the people of the world may be grateful to the Servant of God, Karol Wojtyla, His Holiness, John Paul II, for his worthy bearing of his calling from our Lord, which included the hastening of the fall of the inhumane Communist empire and the elevation of the dignity of human beings together with a clarion call to look to the Person of Christ, as a key to understanding and formation of a truly human humanity.

Glory to God for the gift of this man, for his life and for his exemplary attitude to the final phase of earthly life. Memory eternal, brother Karol, John Paul II!
