Невимовна Краса Святих

Преподобномученик Стефан Новий з гори Преподобного Авксентія

Дата після імені цього Угодника Божого на церковному календарі – 767. Це – рік його упокоєння. А в цьому випадку його мучеництва. Як часто буває з Мучениками 8-го та 9-го століть він був подвижником у обороні Святих Ікон.

Коли Стефан мав тільки 10 літ, римський імператор Лев Ісаврянин почав нищити Ікони і переслідувати тих, які їх шанували. На жаль дуже часто, особливо на землях Східньої Церкви, гарне поняття про симфонію влад церковної та світської тлумачилось світською як дозвіл володіти над Церквою та використовувати її для особистих дочасних цілей. Так було із Левом, який будучи під впливом учителів, що не хотіли повністю прийняти чудову вістку, що Бог справді втілився в Ісусові з Назарету,- що Він Друга Особа Пресвятої Тройці, Який прийшов жити в людському часі та історії і таким чином нам повернути спілкування і єдність з Отцем Небесним.

Особу, як справді втілена можна описувати словами та малюнками, під умовою, що ці слова та малюнки не претендують, що вони повністю описують і представляють Неописаного, Якого належиться шукати й почитувати в тайні любові, молитви, Причастя, тишини. Лев говорив, що таке – неможливе в випадку Ісуса чи Його Матері чи Святих, бо це було б блюзнірством та ідолопоклонством. Ті, які глибоко відчували Радісну Тайну Боговтілення не могли сприйняти це – бо ж саме в цьому й бачили найвище блюзнірство, а саме відкидання на основі людського мислення Все могучості Бога, Який так полюбив світ, що послав Свого Єдинородного Сина в світ, щоб Його повернути до Себе – до життя (Івана 3:16).

Як же можуть люди замість того, щоб вдячно приймати Дару Невимовного – заперечувати, що Він може Його дати? Як же можемо ми, замість того, щоб відповідати якнайкраще тільки можемо на цю невимовну Любов, яка так чудесно й без жодних застережень віддається нам, відкидати її і заперечувати, що вона може бути? А що більше по-блюзнірськи: переслідувати, судити та вбивати тих, які відповідають на ту Любов ревно, енергійно, вдячно та з геройським запалом її провіщати за всяку ціну своїми словами, ділами та жертвою свого життя?

Через оце переслідування молоденького Стефана віддали його батьки на послух монарший на Гору Преподобного Авксентія досвідченому старцеві Іванові. Стефан став таким здібним духовним провідником, що довкола нього зібралося багато послушників, а коли на останку наслідник Лева Імператор Константин Копроним заприторив його в тюрму не змігши навернути його на свою сторону ні обітницями ні погрозами, то Стефан обернув тюрму в монастир, в якому служилися Відправи за монашим уставом.

Провалившись в аргументах проти Ікон Копроним остаточно признався, що його цілковито переміг Св. Стефан тим, що послав своїх вояків забити його на вулицях Константинополя, коли Герой вийшов їм на зустріч із тюрми-монастиря. Церква оспівує Стефанову перемогу такими словами у тропарі: «Ти забив Копронима мечем правдивої Віри».

Поминаючи цього Героя і вдячно приймаючи й це підтвердження дійсності Боговтілення, радіймо й постановляймо в свою чергу хоробро стояти за правду Божої Любові, що прийшла на світ відкупити, освятити та сцілити нас і повернути нас до втраченого Раю. (іюк)

THE BEAUTY OF THE SAINTS

St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, Archbishop of Myra in Lycia

The great Scottish preacher Arthur John Gossip (1873-1954) wrote: “Who is it that has helped you most? Has it not been those who believed in you?  Perhaps there may be few such left.  The light of expectation may have died out of the most friendly and hopeful eyes; and you yourself may have lost heart.  Ah! but there is still One whose faith in you has never wavered. And how wonderful it is that that one should be Jesus Christ!...  It was a wonderful dream God dreamed, Christ says, when He created you; it was a stately being that was in His mind when you were fashioned; and I can make you all He meant that you should be” (The Galilean Accent, 1926).

On December 19 (which is December 6 on the Julian Calendar) we celebrate the memory of such a stately being. It is St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, the original, historical Santa Claus! He is surrounded by legends from his very birth. He is said to have stood upright in the baptismal font for three hours in honour of the Blessed Trinity and to have refused his mother’s milk on Wednesdays and Fridays until she and his father had done their evening prayers. His relics repose to this day in the southern Italian city of Bari whence they were taken in 1087 – an area with a large Italo-Greek population.

In between his birth and his repose there were so many examples of his generosity, his courage and his love of God which was profusely manifested by acts of love and kindness to his fellow creatures. His profound devotion to the Lord led him to seek to be a monk but the Lord directed him to return to the world where he would best serve him. He was made a bishop through a miraculous sign when an angelic messenger told a bishop of the council that was seeking a replacement for the previous Archbishop of Myra, who had reposed, that the first person who came to Church for Sunday services would be the man. It was Nicholas.

He saved many people from hunger and the sins brought about by poverty in which people, in order to survive do things they would not otherwise contemplate, by generous gifts which he always gave secretly – but people often found out who their benefactor had been. He also rescued those wrongfully accused, on one occasion literally grasping the sword that was about to descend on the condemned, whose fate had been decided by bribery. Many are folk he saved from drowning on his voyages upon the sea.

St. Nicholas is also known for a curious incident when he literally struck Arius who denied the Divinity of Christ at the First Ecumenical Council in 325, which gave us the first part of the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed. He was deprived of his office for this, and placed under guard, until several fathers of the Council saw a vision in which our Lord and His Mother restored the symbols of his ministry to him. His action was then seen to be a prophetic one and he was restored and Arius’ teaching was defeated.

After his repose he continues to work numerous miracles. My own family is indebted to him, for when my mother Annie was grievously ill with a fever as a small child, she saw St. Nicholas step out of his Icon (which is virtually indispensable in Orthodox homes) and bless her, after which she quickly got well. When she did repose having given birth to four children who were blessed with such a pious and loving mother, it was six days after the Feast of this wonderful Saint.

Through the prayers of Your Holy One, Nicholas, Lord, fill us with love, generosity and courage to do your works and so become all that You meant us to be.
