INAUGURATION REPLAY Saint Xenia of Rome whom we commemorate today lived in the 5th century A.D. She was the only daughter of a Roman senator and had a comfortable life all planned for her by her parents. She disappointed them quite badly by secretly fleeing with two of her devoted servants, changing her name to “Xenia” which means “stranger” and embarking upon a life of monastic asceticism. She did not however abandon the community of people, but served God humbly and with amazing dedication, praying and interceding for all. It is written of her: “The saint helped everyone: for the destitute, she was a benefactress; for the grief-stricken, a comforter; for sinners, a guide to repentance. She possessed a deep humility, accounting herself the worst and most sinful of all.” Although we have not forsaken the comforts of our life in our times, we can still be inspired by St. Xenia, and do the sort of good works to which she devoted herself so fully that she was made a deaconess by Bishop Paul of Milassa in Asia Minor (most likely today’s Turkey). Also we can derive insight from her decision to take a name that reminds us all that, no matter how long we live and work in this world, it is not truly our home. We are strangers here - on our way to our true home with God in the Heavenly Kingdom which is only faintly perceived here upon earth. (Ihor, apr.)
