SECOND SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

It is traditional on the Second Sunday after Pentecost to celebrate the memory of the Saints of the land in which the Hromada glorifies God and serves Him and His people. In the case of our Hromada of Sviata Pokrova, because we are so closely linked to the land from which most of us came, Ukraine, we celebrate the Saints who shone forth in and from Ukraine. We also use the ancient name of Ukraine Rus’ (from which Ukraine’s neighbour Russia also eventually took its name). And since we are in Canada, which we love and which is also our land, we also celebrate the Saints of Canada. It is not at all difficult to celebrate the Saints’ of Rus’-Ukraine since there are so many of them on the Church Calendar. It is a greater challenge to celebrate the Saints of Canada since, as yet, there are no Orthodox believers here who have been so proclaimed. But our commemoration includes those who are known to God alone – and it is He who shall one day prompt us to canonize some of them. What is most important is that we, imitating our Lord and His faithful servants, the Saints, should live lives of holiness. Let us be humble, kindly and above all penitent – always turning towards the Lord for help in living an ever more virtuous, noble and authentic life!
