Today the Church holds before us the Great Father, St. Gregory Palamas, who responded to the theological controversy of his time, by expanding on the patristic teaching on theosis. This is a strange and daring word that sounds almost presumptuous. We are directed to the purpose of each human being – to become by God’s grace that which God is by His nature. St. Peter had introduced the teaching saying that through God’s promises “you may become partakers in the divine Nature” (2 Peter 1:1-4). Sts. Ireneus and Athanasius had expanded upon this. It was for St. Gregory (1296-1359) to expound its most profound meaning. The opponents of the Hesychasts (devotees of the Jesus Prayer), in their zeal to safeguard the teaching on God’s holiness and transcendence, greatly diminished the loftiness of the human vocation. St. Gregory insisted that God’s love towards us is such that He has made it possible – and even natural – for us to have such intimate communion with Him that we proceed ultimately to become like Him in every way – except that we shall always be His grateful and joyous creation while He shall always be the uncreated Source of all that is. In effect this was the teaching underlying Jesus’ command to be “perfect as your Heavenly Father is perfect” (Matthew 5:48). This is our challenge, our vocation, our glory, our destiny! This is what it means to become truly human – and St. Gregory shows that between God and the truly human person the only distinction is that of essence. May our Lord in His mercy enlighten and energize us to strive for nothing less. Through the prayers of our Holy Father, Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy upon us! (igk)
