On Saturday, November 19, after Vespers at St. Sophie Cathedral, which will be sung by a choir from the Cathedral in Ottawa, there will be a pre-Lenten Zabava in the Church hall organized by the Ukrainian Self-Reliance Association (TYC).  Music will be provided by a live 5-piece band that hails from Zaporizhia in Ukraine.  Frs. Ihor Kutash and Ihor Okhrimtchouk will be present (there will be no Vespers at St. Mary the Protectress Church that evening).  Tickets $15 for adults and $5 for students.  For information call (514) 727-2236.

LIGHT FROM THE SAINTS

Translation of the relics of St Lazarus "of the Four Days in the Tomb" the Bishop of Kiteia on Cyprus

The Transfer of the relics of Righteous Lazarus of the Four Days, Bishop of Kiteia on Cyprus, took place in the ninth century. The Righteous St. Lazarus, the brother of Martha and Mary (Magdalene), lived in the village of Bethany, not far from Jerusalem. During His earthly life the Lord Jesus Christ often visited the house of Lazarus, whom He much loved and called His friend (John 11:3,11), and when Lazarus had died and lain four days already in the grave, the Lord raised him from the dead (John 11:1-44) thereby, prior to His Passion, showing clearly His power over death. This is to say that He did not die because of some inexorable destiny which had to be so fulfilled, but because He thereby willingly offered His life to the Father in accordance with the counsel of the Trinity as to the salvation of the world. (The Church remembers St. Lazarus on the Saturday of the Sixth Week of Great Lent, "Lazarus Saturday.")

Many of the Jews, when they heard about the raising of Lazarus after four days in the tomb, came to Bethany. Being persuaded of the reality of this amazing miracle, they became followers of Christ. Because of this the religious authorities also wanted to kill Lazarus. Righteous Lazarus is mentioned in the Holy Gospel once more: when the Lord had come again to Bethany six days before the Passover, Lazarus was also there (John 12:1-2, 12:9-11). After his raising, St. Lazarus lived another thirty years as a bishop on the island of Cyprus, where he spread Christianity and peacefully fell asleep in the Lord.

The holy relics of St. Lazarus were discovered in Kiteia. They were within a marble coffin, upon which was inscribed: "Lazarus of the Four-Days, the friend of Christ." The Byzantine emperor Leo the Wise (886-911) gave orders to transfer the relics of St. Lazarus to Constantinople in the year 898 and place them within the church of the Righteous Lazarus. The appellation “the wise” may differentiate him from the emperor Leo the Isaurian who unwisely instituted the scourge of iconoclasm during his reign – 717-741. Coincidentally we also remember the Fathers of the Seventh Ecumenical Council today – on the first Sunday after October 11/24 – the Council which re-instated and dogmatized about the veneration of Icons, although its decrees were not ultimately enacted until after the accession to the throne of Empress Theodora in 842.

The Righteous Lazarus of the Four Days in the Tomb is mentioned in the benediction at a memorial service or funeral to remind us of the power of our Lord Jesus over death – and thus that our beloved ones are in His care and therefore not truly dead, for death has been overcome by His victorious self-offering.
