LIGHT FROM THE SAINTS

Yesterday (September 24 – 12 Julian) the Church calendar commemorated St. Theodora of Alexandria. This was a lady who lost her peace of soul when she was seduced into committing adultery. She was consoled by an abbess who reminded her of the forgiveness and mercy of God. Theodora accepted the consolation and resolved to purify herself by becoming a monastic. So that her husband would not find and dissuade her she dressed herself as a man and won acceptance in a monastery as the monk Theodore. Only when she died did the other monks find out that she was a women, after they shunned her for years believing she had committed fornication with the daughter of an abbot of a monastery she had gone to to get provisions . She had even raised the child of this unfortunate woman, when in spite of her denial of guilt she was given him to raise as a consequence of the liaison.

In our times when the words of Jesus (Matthew 8:39), describing the people He came to save as “an evil and adulterous generation”, seem to apply more than ever, it is striking to meet a conscience that is so keen and alive. Our own consciences have become seared about such things. We have become desensitized to sexual – and other sorts of unfaithfulness since we are continually saturated by examples of it and are inclined to accept it as “normal” and “okay”.

We are reminded again how contrary this is to the life of the Kingdom and called to repent – to turn away from such “normalcy” and value and cherish the norms of the Kingdom which will ultimately prevail and last forever. God’s love and forgiveness are always extended to us – but not so that we will keep on living in the darkness of ignorance and self-indulgence but rather to inspire us to turn to the light of the Wisdom which has proclaimed: “He who seeks his life will lose it; and he who loses his life for my sake will find it” (Matthew 10:39).
