НЕВИМОВНА КРАСА СВЯТИХ

Його Святі Руки: Свт. Никифор, Патріарх Константинопольський

Святитель Никифор розпочав своє служіння народові своєму, як вельможа при дворі Імператриці Ірени (797-802), яка була прихильниця Святих Ікон у часі небезпеки коли їх та тих, що їх шанували жорстоко переслідували (725-842). Та він покинув своє вигідне життя при імператорському дворі, щоб стати монахом.

Св. Никифор скоро став відомий за його побожність і в р. 806-му його підвищили до патріаршої гідності. Та він невдовзі попав у неласку за його ревний захист Святих Ікон. Коли люто іконоборчий Імператор Лев Вірменин (813-820) прийшов до влади Святого вислали до Проконніса в р. 815-му, де він і помер на засланні в р. 828-му, подібно як один з його попередників, Св. Іоан Золотоустий, автор тексту Божественної Літургії, якого найчастіше вживаємо в Православній Церкві.

Чотири роки після остаточного повернення Святих Ікон до Храмів Божих в р. 846-му відкрили мощі Патріарха Никифора знайшли їх пахучими та нетлінними. Перенесли їх з Проконніса до Константинополя і впродовж одного дня тримали їх у Святій Софії. Тоді перенесли їх до Церкви Святих Апостолів. Руки Святого, які благословляли і писали на захист Святих Ікон зберігаються в сербському монастирі Хіландар на Святій Горі Афоні.

Святитель залишив три писання проти Іконоборства. Головнтй Празник Св. Никифора святкується 2-го червня (за юліанським календарем) але саме сьогодні святкуємо відкриття та перенесення його святих мощів. Святий Никифоре, молися за нас, щоб і ми шанували Святі Ікони, стаючи ними в нашому щоденному житті! (іюк)

THE BEAUTY OF THE SAINTS

“Praise and Love Him!” - St. John of the Ladder

St. John (c. 579 – 649) was a hermit at the Sinai Peninsula, recognized for his humility, obedience, wisdom (attained through spiritual experience), and discernment. During his lifetime he was renowned for his great knowledge on practicing a holy life. One day another St. John, who was the Abbot (Hegumen) of the Raithu Monastery asked him to write down his wisdom in a book. At first hesitant to take on such a task, John came to believe it was a discipline required by God and he proceeded to write a book that has come to us under the name The Ladder of Divine Ascent. Since “ladder” is “klimax” in Greek, St. John the hermit of Mount Sinai is often called St. John Climacus. Since he lived and laboured on Mount Sinai, he and his work have been compared to the Holy Prophet Moses who saw God and received the Law on that Holy Mountain.

St. John’s book describes the stages in the spiritual life that constitutes our “way” to heaven. The basic metaphor for its structure is the rungs of the ladder that the Old Testament Patriarch Jacob saw in a vision, leading from earth to heaven. There are thirty of these rungs in St. John’s book - one for each of the years of the hidden life of Jesus before his public ministry. Repentance, and the tears that water it, are prominent in St. John’s teaching. This makes him a particularly appropriate spiritual guide for Lent, and the book is read by Orthodox monks throughout this time of fasting and spiritual endeavour.

St. John’s teachings contain much solid practical advice. For example here are a few aphorisms from Step 22:

Against vainglorying (inner boasting): “When I fast, I am vainglorious; and when I permit myself food in order to conceal my fasting from others I am again vainglorious about my prudence. When I dress in fine clothing, I am vanquished by vanity, and if I put on drab clothing, again I am overcome by vanity. If I speak, vainglory defeats me. If I wish to keep silence, I am again given over to it. Wherever this thorn appears, it stands with its points up”.

Against vanity (hidden useless pride): “A vain person seems to honor God, but strives to please men rather than God”.

Against vengefulness: “When you hear that your neighbor or friend has slandered you behind your back, or even to your face, praise and love him”.

This last aphorism is especially useful dealing with other people. You see, our enemies, it has often been noted by spiritual sages, are our best spiritual teachers, just as living in community (whether a family or an intentional community) is the best way to gain the self-knowledge that is necessary for humility. If we can practice praising and loving those who sometimes are not loving to us, this is an excellent way to overcome the negative passions that divert us in our journey to the Kingdom of Heaven, which is symbolized for us by the goal that is just a few weeks away – the Glorious Bright Feast of the Lord’s Resurrection – Pascha! May we attain it in joy and peace through the prayers of St. John of the Ladder. (igk)-
