НЕВИМОВНА КРАСА СВЯТИХ

Священомученик Климент, Папа Римський (101)

Св. Климент (поминаємо його 8-го грудня – це 25-го листопада за юліанським календарем) народився в Римі в багатій та провідній родині хоч вихований був чужими. Здобув хорошу освіту, жив у вигодах і навіть мав доступ до двора імператора але ці справи не приносили йому жодної втіхи, а мудрість язичників йому не імпонувала. Почувши звістку про Христа, Климент покинув свій дім і старався знайти Апостола, щоб більше почути цієї благої вістки. Зустрівся з Ап. Варнавою в Олександрії та прийняв Хрещення з рук Ап. Павла в Палестині. Став він його ревним учнем і постійним спів подорожним, розділяючи його труди та страждання. А остаточно він і став на місці Ап. Петра, як четвертий Єпископ Риму (92-101).

Багато-хто навернувся до Господа Ісуса в наслідок ефективного служіння Климента. Кажуть що одного разу на Пасху охрестив він 424 осіб, а між ними були й члени родини імператора. Його оскаржили перед імператором Траяном (98-117) і той його залсав у Крим (сьогодні це – Україна), щоб працювати у каменоломні біля м. Херсона. Климент знайшов там чимало Християн, засуджених працювати в суворих умовинах з мізерною кількістю води. Господь відповідаючи на його Молитви показав йому джерело води, яке видало сильний струмок на заспокоєння спраги каторжників. Це чудо привабило багато людей, які почувши Климента наверталися до Христа. Щодня схрещувалось 500 а то й більше осіб. Побудували Церкву, в якій він служив як Священик.

Та це імператора Траяна дуже обурило і він наказав утопити Климента. Вкинули Сященомученика в море з якорем прив’язаного навколо шиї. Учні його Корнилій і Фівій просили людей молитися, щоб Господь дав їм побачити тіло Святого і в відповідь на їхні Молитви море подалося назад на три милі від берега. Вони вийшли на дно моря і знайшли печеру з мармора у форму Церкви. У ній знайшли нетлінне тіло їхня Пастиря. Це чудо повторювалося щороку у річницю мучеництва Св. Климента аж до володіння візантійського імператора Никифора (802-811).

Тоді чудо припинилося і мощі Св. Климента були недоступні впродовж 50 літ. А в часі імператора Михаїла і матері його Феодори (855-867), Святі Брати Кирило й Мефодій, які перевели літургійні книги на мову церковнослов’янську, створивши для цього азбуку, яка й носить ім’я «кирилиця», прибули відвідати Херсон, Вони попросили Єп. Юрій херсонського помолитися, щоб Господь показав їм Святі Мощі Священомученика. А тоді пішли в процесії з Священнослужителями, що прибули з ними з Константинополя і Мощі Св. Климента чудесно появилися на поверхні моря о півночі. Вони урочисто принесли їх до Церкви Свв. Апостолів у Константинополі. Частину Мощів теж принесли Свв. Кирило й Мефодій до Риму, але велику частину пізніше приніс до Києва Св. Князь Володимир Великий, який положив їх і Десятинну Церкву.

Св. Климент – Отець Апостольський, який залишив нам два Послання до Коринтян, перші написані Християнські навчання після писань Свв. Апостолів. Святий Отче Клименте, молися Богу за твою Церкву, щоб вона була єдина в вірі, любові та радості! (іюк)

THE BEAUTY OF THE SAINTS

Hieromartyr Clement the Pope of Rome (101)

Clement (commemorated December 8, which is November 25 on the Julian Calendar) was born at Rome into a rich and illustrious family but was raised by strangers. He received a fine education, was surrounded by luxury and even had access to the imperial court. But these comforts brought him no joy, and pagan wisdom failed to attract him. Hearing of Christ Clement left his home and sought to find an Apostle to hear more of the Good News.  He met the Apostle Barnabas in Alexandria and was baptized by the Apostle Peter in Palestine, becoming his zealous disciple and constant companion and sharing his toil and sufferings. He eventually succeeded Peter as the fourth Bishop of Rome (92-101).

Many became followers of Jesus as a result of Clement’s effective ministry. It is said that he once baptized 424 people, some of them even members of the imperial family, on the day of Pascha. He was denounced to the emperor Trajan (98-117) who banished him to Crimea, in what is today Ukraine, to work at a stone quarry near the city of Kherson. Clement found many Christian believers there, sentenced to labor under harsh conditions with very little water. In response to his prayers the Lord revealed the location of a spring, which yielded a powerful stream. This miracle attracted great numbers of people who heard him and were converted to Christ. Each day 500 or more were baptized. A church was built, in which he served as priest.

But the emperor Trajan was enraged by this and ordered that Clement be drowned. The martyr was thrown into the sea with an anchor tied to his neck. The saint's disciples Cornelius and Fibius asked the people to pray that the Lord would permit them to see the martyr's body and in answer to their prayers the sea drew back a distance of three miles from the shore. They walked out on the seabed and found a marble cave shaped like a church. In it was the incorrupt body of their holy Shepherd. The miracle occurred each year on the anniversary of St. Clement's martyrdom right up until the reign of the Byzantine Emperor Nicephorus (802-811).

The miracle ceased at that time and the relics of St. Clement became inaccessible for fifty years. In the time of the emperor Michael and his mother Theodora (855-867), the holy Brothers Cyril and Methodius, who translated the liturgical books into Church Slavonic creating the alphabet known as Cyrillic, came to visit Kherson. They asked Bishop George of Kherson to pray that the Lord would show them the relics of the Hieromartyr. They walked along the shore in procession with the clergy who came with them from Constantinople. The holy relics of St. Clement miraculously appeared on the surface of the sea at midnight. They solemnly brought them to the Church of the Holy Apostles at Constantinople. A portion of the relics were then brought to Rome by Sts. Cyril and Methodius, but a large portion was later brought to Kyiv by the holy Kniaz Volodymyr the Great and placed in the Church of the Tithes.

St. Clement is an Apostolic Father who has left us two Epistles to the Corinthians, the first written examples of Christian teaching after the writings of the holy Apostles. Holy Father Clement, pray to God for your Church that it might be united in the bonds of faith, love and joy! (igk)
