Невимовна Краса Святих

Святителя Спиридона Тримифунтського

25-го грудня, день коли християни, що празнують по григоріанському календарі святкують Різдво відповідає 12-му грудню на юліанському календарі. У той же день ми празнуємо пам’ять надзвичайного Угодника Божого, який був другом Св. Миколая, який також тісно пов’язаний з цим святковим часом, коли дають подарунки.

Подібно Св. Миколаю він також був учасником Першого Вселенського Собору, що відбувся в Нікеї, і блискуче обороняв вчення про Пресвяту Тройцю. До своїх слів додав ще й чудесну ознаку, виявляючи єдність, яка пробуває в різноманітності. У той час уважали, що цегли складаються з 3-ох елементів: вогню, землі та води. Коли промовляв Спиридон він підніс цеглу і вискочив з неї вогонь а з-під неї витекла води.

Він також дав чудесний дар золотих монетів бідному хліборобові, який мусів дати заставу багачу, щоб набути в його збіжжя для сівби. Св. Спиридон при цьому наказав йому повернути подібну суму, коли стане заможніший. Чоловік пригадав собі його слово і евентуально відніс йому золото. Коли він ще дивився Святець положив золото на землю і воно знову повернулося в форму змія, який поповз назад у нору в саду Св. Спиридона. Власно через це чудо звертаються до Св. Спиридона ті, які винні комусь гроші, щоб допоміг віддати їх.

Св. Спиридон народився на острові Кипрі. Батьки були прості люди а він був пастухом. Він одружився і мав діти, але в відносно ранньому віці nовдовів. Вибрали його на Єпископа Тримифунта, який був головним містом на той час на острові, а сьогодні остався, як грецьке село Тримифус. Він продовжував пильнувати отари і обробляти землю і будучи єпископом.

Одного разу коли Св. Спиридон відгукнувся на запрошення прибути до царського двору (він же уздоровив Імператора Констанція від важкої недуги своєю молитвою) то один вояк помилився думаючи, що він жебрак через його вбогу одежу і вдарив його. А смиренний Муж Божий покірно повернув йому і другу щоку.

Спиридон упокоївся в Бозі в р. 348-му а його мощі донині нетлінні. Такими вони осталися через століття і в Його Свято обносять їх святочною процесією через вулиці острова Корфу, що знаходиться близько західнього побережжя Греції.

Св. Спиридон дуже діяльний і сьогодні. Віг один з «мандруючих Святих» (як і Св. Діонісій з острова Закінфа, якого пам’ять святкуємо 30-го грудня – 17-го по-юліянському). Що року мусять міняти шовкові сандалі на його ногах, тому ж що вони витираються через його мандри по острові, щоб тихо чинити працю Господню!

Через Молитви Святого Твого смиренного Спиридона, Господа, навчи нас уповати постійно на Тебе у всіх своїх потребах і щедро роздати багатство, яким Ти кожного дня обдаровуєш нас!

THE BEAUTY OF THE SAINTS

St. Dionysius of Zakynthos

A new year has dawned! May it bring us joy and peace in the Lord and fruitful work in His vineyard, this beautiful world that He has made with a plan and vocation for each of us.

As 2005 drew to a close on December 30 (it corresponds to December 17 on the Julian calendar) the Ecclesia (the Church) celebrated the birthday into Heaven of a great Man of God, St. Dionysius of Zakynthos.

I was greatly impressed many years ago to learn of the forgiveness shown by St. Dionysius. This happened when a frightened fugitive came to his monastery to seek refuge from the family of a man he had killed. Upon further inquiry Dionysius found that the victim was his own brother, Constantine. It was members of his own family who came to the monastery soon after. After weeping with them the Saint nonetheless sent them off in another direction. He then admonished the man whose life he had saved, brought him to repentance and sent him off to where he would be safe. Eventually this man became a monk himself.

Such heartbreaking imitation of Jesus’ forgiveness of those who “do not know what they do” (Luke 23:34), could only come from a soul in close union with the Source of all Love and Compassion. One shudders at the thought of such a test, yet there are heroic souls that do obtain such triumphs. They are those whom our Lord called blessed peacemakers who “will be called the sons (and daughters – igk) of God” (Matthew 5:9), i.e. because they so perfectly manifest the Divine qualities of their Father.

Then at a Montreal restaurant whose owners hailed from the Greek island of Zakynthos of which St. Dionysius is the patron I heard about his on-going miracles, which have earned him the name of “the walking saint”. Although he reposed in the Lord in 1624, his relics are incorrupt, and there are times when the reliquary where he reposes can not be opened. When it is they say that there are sand and seaweed on his sandals – for he has been walking about the island doing his good works. And as with St. Spiridon of whom I wrote last week, his sandals need to be replaced from time to time. I recalled venerating a reliquary with one of these sandals in the Greek Church of the Holy Trinity which once stood near the corner of Sherbrooke and St. Laurent in the early 70’s and experiencing a sense of exaltation without even knowing anything about him.

St. Dionysius was born on the island of which he is the patron and protector in 1546, but his family (Sigouros) hailed from Italy (his mother was of the royal household) and Normandy through Venice. He was baptized Draganinos (curiously sounds like a Slavic name) by a priest who was himself to be canonized – and who also became a “walking saint”. It was Gerasimus the New Ascetic of Cephalonia (reposed August 15/28 1579). He obtained an excellent education and at the age of 21 he entered the Monastery of Strophades, having given away all of his earthly possessions. He was tonsured a monk with the name of Daniel and ordained a priest in 1577.

While en route to the Holy Land Dionysius was prevailed upon by Archbishop of Athens, Nikanor, to accept to be Bishop of the Greek Island of Aegina (later graced by another Saint, Nektarios of Pentapolis, who was the spiritual director of a woman’s monastery there in the early part of the 20^th century until his repose). His ministry there won such acclaim due to the miraculous effects of his prayers and blessings that he soon sought and was given permission to return to the relative tranquility of his native island where he presided as a beloved Archpastor of his flock until his repose on December 17/30, 1622.

A final note: the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George in New York City was destroyed on September 11, 2001, when the two buildings of the World Trade Centre collapsed upon it. Two relics were recovered: a Cross and a paper Icon of St. Dionysius. A reminder of the power of forgiveness to bring about peace and harmony?
