7-го липня, П’ятниця, Різдво чесного славного Пророка, Предтечі й Хрестителя Господнього Іоана: 9:30 ран. Літургія.

8-го липня, Субота: 5:00 по пол. Вечірня.

9-го липня, 4-та Неділя по П’ятидесятниці: 9:00 ран. Літургія. З огляду на відсутність о. Ігоря на Свято Святих  Славних і Первоверховних Апостолів Петра й Павла (12-го липня) ми відсвяткуємо їхню пам’ять у цей же день.

Літній порядок:  Недільні Літургії почнинаються о 9:00 ран. без Утрені аж до 10-го вересня.  А в неділі 16-го і 23-го липня не буде в нас Відправ.  Натомість 16-го липня Обідницю відслужить у Катедрі Св. Софії о. Декан Евген Рудич об 11:00 ран.; а 23-го відслужить о год. 10:00 ран. о. Настостель Володимир Кушнір.

July 9, 4^th Sunday after Pentecost: 9:00 a.m. Liturgy.  Since Fr. Ihor will be away on the Feast of The Holy, Glorious and All-Praised Leaders of the Apostles Peter and Paul (July 12) we shall celebrate their memory on this day.

Summer schedule: Sunday Liturgies at 9:00 a.m. without Matins until September 10.

No Services on Sundays July 16 and 23 in this Temple.  Instead on July 16 Fr. Gene Ruditch, our Dean of the Montreal-Ottawa Deanery, will celebrate an Obidnytsia at St. Sophie Cathedral at 11:00 a.m.; and on July 23 the Dean of the Cathedral, Fr. Volodymyr Kouchnir will celebrate Liturgy at the Cathedral at 10:00 a.m.

Bible Study on the Book of Acts (English) will be offered this Wednesday, June 28, in our Hall 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. led by Fr. Ihor.  We shall resume it in September.

НЕВИМОВНА КРАСА СВЯТИХ

«Я переважно харчуюсь і заспокоюю свою спрагу солодкими словами Божими!»

Преподобний Онуфрій Великий

Постать Преподобного Онуфрія, високого тонкого чоловіка з довгою білою бородою, яка спадає до його ніг, служить натхненням для східніх Християн сотками літ.  Завтра буде 10 літ від посвячення в Музею цивілізації в Оттаві української католицької Церкви, яку перевезли туди з околиці Смокі Лейк в Альберті, де її побудували українські піонери.  Церкви носить ім’я Преподобного Онуфрія.  Фіґура цього Святця видна під сходами до славного Собору Св. Юра у Львові.  А впродовж декілька десятиліть православні семінаристи у Польщі розпочинали свою духовну освіту в монастирі Св. Онуфрія в Яблочині.  Кажуть, що сам Святець вибрав це місце, коли яких 400 літ тому появився там рибалкам і залишив Ікону себе на березі річки Буг. 

Життя цього надзвичайного Угодника Божого покрите таємницею бо ж він був одним з Отців Пустельників, які мали глибокий вплив на східню духовість у віках 3-му та 4-му.  Це в той час Християнство виходили з підпілля і ставало домінантною релігією в Римській Імперії.  У той час багато людей приходили в Церкву не розуміючи і на маючи жодного наміру жити згідно з навчанням Господа нашого Ісуса Христа, виложеного в Євангелії, а зокрема в Заповіддях Блаженства.  У цей час чимало Християн вирішили піти в пустиню і жити молитвою під опікою Самого Бога в цьому важкому окруженні спеки та холоду, де важко було знаходити що-небудь їсти та пити, і де було багато хижих звірів та розбійників. 

Знаємо ми про життя Преп. Онуфрія зі свідчень монаха Пафнутія. Святий прожив був вже 60 літ у пустині, коли його відвідав Пафнутій.  Його волосся та борода звисали до землі.  Нормально так не буває. Борода доходить до певної довжини і більше не росте.  Та Святець розповів, що його борода виросла до колін в один день, щоб покрити його наготу, коли з нього зпали залишки одежі з якої прибув був у пустиню.  Все волосся на ньому було біле, як сніг і вся постать його неначе сяяла.

Побачивши Пафнутія Онуфрій назвав його по імені і розказав про своє життя в пустині.  Це його Ангел Хоронитель привів його сюди, сказав він.  Довгий час він кормився овочами, яких дуже важко можна було знайти, а потім коли він переніс терпеливо та з вірою напади демонів та коли його серце утвердилося і зосередилося на Божій любові та милості, Ангел Божий приносив йому хліб для поживи.  Крім того Божим провидінням виросла біля його келії пальма, яка родила багато фініків і близько стало текти джерело води.

Однак, говорив Онуфрій із сяючим обличчям: «Я переважно харчуюсь і заспокоюю свою спрагу солодкими словами Божими!»  А на запит Пафнутія: «Як ви причащаєтесь?» відповів пустинник, що йому Ангел Божий приносить Святе Причастя що суботи.  На наступний день Старець сказав Пафнутію, що наступив час прощатися з землею.  Став він на коліна, помолився і тихо віддав Богу свій дух.  У той момент Пафнутій побачив, як небесне сяйво покрило тіло старого і почув ангельський спів.

Похоронивши тіло Онуфрія Пафнутій повернувся у свій монастир і розказав іншим про чудесне життя цього мужа і про велич Божого Провидіння, яке постійно кормить та захищає тих, які цілковито віддали себе на служіння Богові.  Онуфрій упокоївся в році 400.

Можливо що думка про те, як Бог міг удержати людину при житті так багато років тпм, де більшість могли б прожити тільки декілька днів приносила натхнення східнім Християнам і веліла їм шанувати Св. Онуфрія.  Та хоч нам це не видно ми також живемо в пустині, бо ж хоч довкола нас повно вигод, харчів, одежі та покрівля сама кількість їх часто доводить до голодного завмирання того що найголовніше для радісного людського життя – душі, духа!  Без корму молитви та солодких слів Божих вони ж завмирають і люди наповнюються журбою та розпукою, яких марно намагаються прогнати здобуттям ще більше забавок та втіх.  І так пропливає наше життя!  Дивімось на сильну постать Св. Онуфрія і пригадаймо собі, звідки саме приходить справжній корм та здоров’я! (іюк)

Venerable Onuphrius the Great

The vision of the Venerable Onuphrius, a tall slender man with a long white beard flowing to the ground before him, has been an inspiration for Eastern Christians for hundreds of years.  Tomorrow it shall be ten years since the dedication in the Museum of Civilization in Ottawa of a Ukrainian Catholic Church brought over intact from where it had been built by pioneers in the district of Smokey Lake, Alberta.  It is the Church of St. Onuphrius.  A statue of this Saint is found in a little shrine beneath the steps leading to the mighty St. George’s Cathedral in Lviv.  For several decades Orthodox seminarians in Poland have begun their spiritual training in the monastery of St. Onuphrius in Jablechna.  It is said that he himself chose the place for it, appearing nearly four hundred years ago to fishermen and leaving them an Icon of himself on the banks of the river Buh. 

The story of this remarkable Saint is shrouded in mystery for he was one of the Desert Fathers who made such an impression on Eastern spirituality in the third and fourth centuries, around the time that Christianity was emerging as the dominant faith of the Roman Empire.  At that time many folks joined the Church with little understanding and still less intent to live according to the teachings of Our Lord Jesus as proclaimed in the Gospels and especially in the Beatitudes.  At this time many Christians were inspired to go out into the desert and live in prayer under the providence of God alone in this harsh environment of extreme heat and cold, very little to eat and drink surrounded by all sorts of dangerous animals and desperadoes. 

We know of the life of St. Onuphrius from the testimony of the monk Paphnutius.  The saintly hermit had lived in the desert for sixty years when Paphnutius visited him. His hair and beard reached to the ground.  This does not normally happen – the beard reaches a certain length and grows no further.  His beard, related the Saint, grew to his feet in one day to cover his nakedness when the clothes with whish he had come to the desert fell away.  All the hairs on him were as white as snow and his entire appearance glistened, sublime and awesome.

As soon as he saw Paphnutius, Onuphrius called him by name and related to him his life in the wilderness. He said that it was his guardian angel who had brought him to this desolate place. For a long time he fed only on vegetables which could rarely be found in the wilderness and after that, when he had overcome by patience and faith violent attacks of temptations by demons and when his heart was fortified and centred upon the love of God, an angel of God brought him bread for nourishment. Besides that, by the good Providence of God, a palm tree grew next to his cell which brought forth dates in abundance and a spring of water began to flow there.

However, Onuphrius said, his face shining: "I mostly feed and quench my thirst on the sweet words of God."  To Paphnutius' question: "How do you receive Communion?" the hermit replied that an angel of God brings him Holy Communion every Saturday. The next day, the elder said to Paphnutius that this would be the day of his departure from this world.  He knelt in prayer and quietly gave up his spirit to God. At that moment, Paphnutius saw a heavenly light as it illumined the body of the reposed saint and heard the singing of angelic hosts.

Having buried the body of Onuphrius, Paphnutius returned to his monastery and related to others the wondrous life of this man and the greatness of God's Providence which always nourishes and protects those who have completely given themselves over to the service of God. Onuphrius died in the year 400 A.D.

Perhaps it is the thought of God being able to keep a man alive for so many years in a situation where most could only live for a few days that has inspired Eastern Christians and led them to honour St. Onuphrius.  Although it is not immediately obvious, we too live in deserts for even though comforts, food, clothing and shelter abound, their very abundance often leads to starvation of that which is most essential for a happy human life: the soul and the spirit.  Without the nourishment of prayer and the sweet words of God these atrophy and people are filled with anxiety and despair which they seek in vain to dispel with more and more toys and pleasures.  And so our lives flow by.  Let us look to the strong figure of St. Onuphrius and recall where our true nourishment and health are to be found!
