НЕВИМОВНА КРАСА СВЯТИХ

«Тобою ми ожили в Бозі і дано нам пізнати життя в Христі» Св. Іларіон Києво-Печерський, Митрополит Київський (11-те століття)

3-го листопада (віповідає 21-му жовтню на юліанському календарі) святкуємо пам’ять декількох Іларіонів. Один з них – Преподобний Іларіон Києво-Печерський, якого переважно ототожнюють з першим українцем Митрополитом Києва (все попередники від часу Хрещення руси в р. 988-му були греками), якого інтронізація відбулася в величному новому Соборі Св. Софії в 1051-му р. так який правдоподібно упокоївся в р. 1053-му.

Був він Священиком у селі Берестове біля Києва і духовним дорадником і приятелем Князя Ярослава Мудрого. Його вибір був поважним кроком у напрямку зрілості Київської Церкви, яка впродовж менше чим століття виплекала своїх власних ієрархів, які були спосібні провадити свою паству по шляху спасіння.
Св. Іларіон величав Хрестителя Руси, Св. Рівноапостольного Князя Володимира Великого повищими словами у монументальному творі його: «Слово про закон і благодать», який зберігся до наших днів.

З цього твору ми бачимо Святого, як людину сповнену глибокою вірою та радістю в Господі. Ім’я його «Іларіон» означає ту радість та втіху, які типові для людини близько поєднаної з Богом. Прикметник цей знаходимо в Молитві, яку співаємо на Вечірні. Переважно його перекладають словом «тихе» - «Світло тихе». Але дійсно оригінальні грецькі слова «фос іларон» мають значіння «радісне». Так радісно Церква святкує початок нового дня, який літургічно починається тоді коли сонце заходить – але ми очікуємо і проголошуємо з радісним упевненням, що таки приходить світло! Ця надія сповнюється символічно коли сходить сонце, що в часі коли ми співаємо цю Молитву ще віддалено на багато годин, а сповнюється теологічно Воскресенням Господнім, дійсним Сонцем Праведним, якого сходяче сонце колись показало Жоням Мироносицям.

Радість Св. Іларіона походила між іншим від його пізнання дії Господньої в історії, яким він переконався, що його земля і нарід теж покликані з темряви несвідомості, забобонів і ідолослужіння. Щоб прийняти своє належне місце поміж націями, які навернулися до Господа Ісуса Христа, щоб стати і Його народом. Його твір дійсно належиться побожно прочитати. Виданий він українською та англійською мовами в журналі «Віра й Культура» Колегією Св. Андрея в Вінніпезі.

Славний церковний провідник св. п. Митрополит Іларіон (Огієнко), що був Первоєрархом Української Православної Церкви в Канаді від ранніх років 1950-их до ранніх 1970-их, напевно вибрав своє монарше ім’я в честь цього славного свого попередника. Він також сильно працював для свого народу в Господньому Винограднику і дав нам багато наукових творів і як свій головний твір – сучасний переклад Св. Біблії на українській мові. Сьогодні нашого Митрополита Іларіона широко шанують і на рідних землях після впадку комуністичної ідеології, яка його забороняла. Може колись Господь доведе й до його канонізації як Святого.
Як колишній учень Митрополита Іларіона в ранніх роках 1960-их я пригадую контроверсію, коли місцеве товариство українських православних студентів «Товариство Іларіона» перейменувалось на «Товариство Св. Іларіона» довідавшись, що наш покровитель Митрополит Іларіон Київський свого часу був зарахований до хору Святих. Сьогодні вже немає жодної контроверсії в цьому бо ж його ім’я записане і в Служебниках нашої Церкви і його Ікона знаходиться в наших Храмах.

Ми радіємо в упевненню про те, що Господь, Який покликав працівників у Свій Виноградник ніколи не покидає їх, навіть коли в світі виглядає, що вони забуті і покинені, а прославляє їх у славі Його Царства, яке тут зараз поміж нами і яке ще має виявитися у всій величній повноті. (іюк)

THE BEAUTY OF THE SAINTS

St. Hilarion of the Kyiv caves, Metropolitan of Kyiv (11th century)

There are a number of Hilarions commemorated on November 3 (corresponds to October 21on the Julian Calendar). One of them is the Venerable Hilarion of the Kyiv Caves, who is usually identified with the first Ukrainian Metropolitan of Kyiv (all the previous ones since the Baptism of Rus’ in 988 had been Greeks) who was enthroned in 1051 in the splendid new Cathedral of Holy Wisdom (Sophia) and most likely reposed in 1053.

He had been a priest in the village of Berestove near Kyiv and a spiritual advisor and friend of Kniaz’ Yaroslav the Wise. His election marked an important step in the maturity of the Church of Kyiv, which had nurtured within less than a century its own indigenous hierarchs capable of leading their flock to salvation.

St. Hilarion eulogized the Baptizer of Rus’, the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Kniaz’ Volodymyr the Great with the above words in his monumental work which survives to this day: “Discourse Concerning Law and Grace”.

From this work we can see the Saint as a man of profound faith and joy in the Lord. The name “Hilarion”, having the same root as “hilarious”, signifies the delight, joy and gladness that are typical of one who is in close communion with God. The adjective is found in the Vesperal Hymn “O gladsome Light” (“phos ilaron”). With this hymn the Church celebrates the beginning of a new day, which actually begins liturgically when the sun has gone down - but we await and proclaim with joyful certainty the coming of the light. This hope is fulfilled figuratively in the rising of the sun which, as we sing is still long hours away, and theologically in the Resurrection of the Lord, the true Sun of Righteousness which the rising of the sun revealed to the Myrrh-bearing Women.

St. Hilarion’s joy arose from, among other things, his discernment of the working of the Lord in history by which he saw that his own land and people had been called from the darkness of ignorance, superstition and idolatry to take their place among the nations who had turned to the Lord Jesus Christ and become His people. His work is available in English translation from the periodical “Faith and Culture” (“Vira I Kultura”) published by St. Andrew’s College in Winnipeg. It is truly worthy of pious reading.

The great Church leader, Metropolitan Ilarion (Ohienko) of Blessed Memory, primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada from the early 1950’s to his repose in the early 1970’s, most likely chose his monastic name in honour of this great predecessor. He laboured mightily among his people in the Lord’s Vineyard, giving us many scholarly books and – his crowning labour – a modern translation into Ukrainian of the Holy Bible. Today Metropolitan Ilarion (the transliteration of the name in Ukrainian does not use the “h” which actually is also silent in modern Greek) is widely revered in his homeland, Ukraine, after the fall of Communist ideology. It may be that the Lord will bring about also his canonization one day.

As a former student of Metropolitan Ilarion in the early 1960’s I recall the controversy when the local Ukrainian Orthodox student’s club “The Ilarion Society” changed its name to “The St. Ilarion Society” in keeping with our discovery that our patron, Metropolitan Hilarion of Kyiv, had indeed been numbered among the Saints at some time. Today there is no longer any controversy about such a matter, since his name is in the Sluzhebnyk published by our Church, and in Icons in our Temples.

We rejoice in the certainty that the Lord Who has called labourers into His Vineyard does not abandon them, even when in the world they appear to have been forgotten and despised, but reveals them in glory in the Kingdom which is already here and also to come in its manifest fullness. (igk)
