«Я – Християнин!” Св. Лукіян, Священик Антіохійський

Священомученик Лукіян, Священик Антіохійський, народився в сирійському місті Самосата. Став він сиротою у віці 12 літ. Лукіян тоді роздав усе своє добро убогим і подався в місто Едесу, де під наглядом ісповідника Макарія пильно вивчав Св. Писання і наслідував аскетичне життя самовідречення. Я висвятили на Священика за його побожне й ревне поширення Христової Віри поміж євреями і язичниками.
Св. Лукіян відкрив школу в Антіохії – славну катехитичну школу, до якої приходило багато студентів. Він викладав Св. Писання і як жити чеснот ним життям. Він також працював над грецьким текстом Септуаґінти, який в багатьох місцях був дещо спотворений переписувачами а особливо єретиками, які його викривляли, щоб підтверджувати їхнє фальшиве навчання.

Лукіян жив у часі, коли відповідь на запит Господа Ісуса: «Хто Я?» (Матвія 16:15) широко обговорювали. Багато науковців твердять, що Лукіяна погляди на це не сходилися з Православ’ям, та що Арій, якого навчання опрокинув Перший Вселенський Собор у п. 325-му, як вихованець цієї школи поширював те, що навчився від нього.

Однак вірність Лукіяна Господу Ісусові була непохитною. Св. Лукіяна арештувала в часі переслідування імператором Діоклетіяном, яке розпочалося в р. 303-му. Його заприторили в тюрму в Нікомедії і там впродовж 9-ох років він заохочував інших християн, ув’язнених з ним, щоб вони твердо трималися свого визнання Христа та щоб не боялися ані мук ані смерти.

Його визнання перед його катами було ясним: «Ми ніколи не поклонялися таємно чи в якийсь негідний спосіб Єдності Бога, яку провіщено нам в Ісусі Христі, віру Якого надихає нам Святий Дух» писав він. Він відкидав ідолів, прославляв Заповіді Блаженства і запрошував Християн радіти з приводу убожества і зберігати лагідність та прямувати до спокою. «Дивіться, як бояться нас язичники,» говорив він, «що вони мусять нас приводити перед царів та суддів зв’язаними жертвами. Але нехай поглянуть в книги історії і побачать що за чуда слідують після нашої смерти від їхніх рук.» На суді його поставили йому питання: «Хто ти?» П він відповів: «Я – Християнин». А тоді запитали про його професію, його ім’я, його походження, його рід. Відповідь Лукіяна на кожне питання була та ж сама: «Я – Християнин».

Св. Лукіян остаточно помер у тюрмі за володіння Максимина в р. 313-му внаслідок страшних тортур та з голоду. Перед своєю смертю він побажав прийняти Св. Таїнства Христові на Празник Богоявлення. Деякі Християни провідували його і принесли йому хліб та вино для Євхаристії. Священомученик, прикутий ланцюгами до ліжка на якому були гострі куски розбитих горшків приніс Безкровну Жертву на своїх грудях і всі Християни в тюрмі з ним допомагали йому і прийняли Причастя. На наступний день імператор прислав людей побачити, чи Мученик ще живий. Св. Лукіян три рази промовив своє славне визнання: «Я – Християнин» а тоді віддав свою душу Богові. Передання говорить, що тіло Св. Мученика вкинули в море але дельфіни принесли його до берега після 30-ох днів. Вірні побожно похоронили тіло багатостраждальному Св. Лукіяна.

День Святкування його пам’яті пересли з 7-го січня (це 20-го січна на григоріанському календарі) на 15-го жовтня (28-го жовтня на григоріанському календарі), щоб тоді відзначити Собор Св. Івана Предтечі. На 15-го жовтня посвятили Храм, якого збудувала Св. Імператриця Єлена над Мощами Лукіяна в Антіохії.
За Молитвами Св. Лукіяна дай, Господи, щоб ми послідовно присвоювали його визнання Тебе в нашому житті в цьому світі. Дай щоб і ми на кожний виклик у нашому житті відповідали рішучим: «Я – Християнин»! (іюк)

THE BEAUTY OF THE SAINTS

"I am a Christian!” St. Lucian, Presbyter of Antioch

The Hieromartyr Lucian, Presbyter of Antioch, was born in the Syrian city of Samosata. He was left orphaned at twelve years of age. Lucian distributed his possessions to the poor, and went to the city of Edessa to the confessor Macarius, under whose guidance he diligently studied the Holy Scriptures and learned the ascetic life. Lucian was ordained a presbyter due to his pious and zealous spreading of the Faith of Christ among the Jews and pagans,

St. Lucian opened a school in Antioch – the famous catechetical school where many students gathered. He taught them the Holy Scriptures and how to live a virtuous life. He also worked on the Greek text of the Septuagint, which had been corrupted in many places by copyists and heretics who deliberately distorted it in order to support their false teachings. The entire Greek text of the Bible which he corrected was hidden in a wall at the time of his confession of Christ, and it was found during the lifetime of St Constantine the Great.

Lucian lived in a time when the response to Jesus’ question: “Who do you say I am” (Matthew 16:15) was much in debate. Many scholars have said that his own views on it were not in keeping with Orthodoxy and that Arius, whose teachings were denounced by the First Ecumenical Council in 325 A.D., was a product of his school.

Nonetheless Lucian’s faithfulness to the Lord Jesus was absolute. St. Lucian was arrested during the persecution of Diocletian which started in 303. He was sent to prison in Nicomedia, where for nine years he encouraged other Christians imprisoned with him to remain steadfast in their confession of Christ, urging them not to fear tortures or death.
His defense before his executioners was clear: "It has never been in secret or in some disgraceful way that we adored the unity of God announced to us in Jesus Christ and Whose faith is inspired in us by the Holy Spirit," he wrote. He denounced the idols, exalted the Beatitudes and invited Christians to rejoice because of poverty and to preserve their gentleness as well as to strive for peace. "Look at how the pagans fear us," he exclaimed, "that they must lead us before kings and tribunes as bound victims. But let them look in the history books and they will see the miracles which inevitably follow our deaths at their hand." At his trial he was asked: “Who are you?” to which he replied: “I am a Christian.” He was then asked about his profession, his name, his origin, his family. Lucian’s reply to each question was the same: “I am a Christian.”

St. Lucian finally died in prison under the reign of Maximinus in 313 from many terrible tortures and from hunger. Before his death, he wished to partake of the Holy Mysteries of Christ on the Feast of Theophany. Some Christians visited him and brought him bread and wine for the Eucharist. The Hieromartyr, bound by chains and lying on a bed of sharp potsherds, offered the Bloodless Sacrifice upon his chest, and all the Christians there in prison assisted him and received the Eucharist. The next day the emperor sent people to see if the martyr was still alive. St. Lucian repeated his famous testimony three more times: "I am a Christian" and then surrendered his soul to God. Tradition says that the body of the holy martyr was thrown into the sea, but after thirty days dolphins brought it to shore. Believers reverently buried the body of the much-suffering St. Lucian.

The day of his commemoration was changed from January 7 (which corresponds to January 20 on the Gregorian Calendar) to October 15 (October 28 on the Gregorian Calendar), to make way for the Feast of the Synaxis of St. John the Forerunner. October 15 was the day that a Church built over his relics in Antioch by the Holy Empress Helena was consecrated.

Through the prayers of St. Lucian grant, Lord, that we might make his confession a consistent reality in our lives in this world. May we too resolutely respond to each challenge we face with a firm: “I am a Christian”. (igk)
