Orthodox Christian Women (OCW) is an Orthodox women’s fellowship based in Montreal. Every year, they host a conference. This year, they have invited Gayle Woloschak, a member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the U.S.A., radiation oncologist and author of numerous books and articles on science and religion. Men are also welcome at the conference. The title is Orthodoxy Meets the Biological Revolution.  «Ми не повинні ніколи допускати вхід думкам, які наповняють нас смутком і ненавистю…»

Преподобний Евфимій Великий

Чимало Святих, яких ми православні шануємо, служили Богу на землі як монахи. Це не означає, що тільки монахи вгодні Богу. Ми всі покликані і маємо честь служити Тому, Хто привів і нас і все, що тільки існує, до буття – ВСЮДИ, ДЕ Б МИ НЕ БУЛИ.  У дечому ми зауважимо, що найкраще Йому служити наверненням від того, що робимо до чогось благороднішого. А в більшости справ ми знайдемо радість і задоволення чинячи все, що треба з увагою та любов’ю на добро іншим, а це текож найкращий спосіб служити Йому!

На 2-го лютого (що відповідає 20-му січню за григоріянським календарем) ми святкували пам’ять світоча поміж монахами, що служили Богові, Преподобного Евфимія Великого, що народився в р. 377-му, а походив від давнього міста Мітелем (сьогодні це місто Малатія в Туреччині). Його ім’я «Евфимій», що означає «потіха», нагадує ту втіху, яку приніс він своїм стареньким батькам, для яких він був відповідь на їхні молитви, та яку пригосить усім, що слухають його науку і наслідують примір його життя.

Його подвиги розпочав він біля рідного міста а потім у віці 29 літ після відвідин Єрусалиму, він та інший монах, Феоктист, з яким жив у такій дружності, що вони мали начебто одну душу, поселилися в пустині біля Єрихону. Потім же завжди шукаючи спокою він перенісся до іншої пустині біля Мертвого Моря.  А на останку він повернувся до монастиря Феоктиста і заснував лавру (скупчення келій чи печер, в яких живуть пустельники) біля шляху, що веде від Єрусалиму до Єрихону,

Евфимій подав багато добрих наставлень братам монахам, а між ними ось це: «Ми не повинні ніколи допускати вхід думкам, які наповняють нас смутком і ненавистю до місця, де ми живемо і кажуть нам, що ми повинні піти деінде. Якщо хтось намагається робити добре діло там, де проживає а не завершить його, він не повинен думати що він виконає його де інде. То не місце дає успіх а віра й тверда постанова. Дерево, якого часто пересаджують не принесе плоду». Це – добра порада тим, які бажають бути досконалими, як досконалий наш Отець Небесний. Ми маємо берегти наші думки і не допускати вхід таким, які приносять нам смуток і ненависть.

Святець також чинив багато чуд молитвою і навернув багатьох на дорогу світла й життя. Він також дав велику підтримку православному розумінні Особи Христа, що Він справжня Людина і справжній Бог у той сам час, так як навчає Св. Писання, а це затвердив назавжди Четвертий Вселенський Собор, що відбувся в Халкедонії в р. 451-му.

Св. Евфимій упокоївся в Бозі в р. 473-му, у 97-му році його життя. До цього він приготовив братів монахів, обіцяючи завжди бути з ними в дусі. Нехай він своїми молитвами допоможе й нам у наших зусиллях знайти радість у підкоренні Господеві у всьому і таким чином зростати в досконалій свободі тих, які сповняють Божу волю всюди і завжди. THE BEAUTY OF THE SAINTS

“We must never admit evil thoughts that fill us with sorrow and hatred…”

Venerable Euthymius the Great

A good many of the Saints we Orthodox venerate served the Lord upon the earth as monastics.  This does not mean that only those who so serve Him are pleasing to Him.  We are all called upon and privileged to serve Him, Who is the author of our being and absolutely everything that is, WHEREVER we may be.  We shall find that in certain areas of our life the best way to serve Him is to repent, to turn away from what we have been doing and become involved in nobler matters.  In other areas we shall find joy and fulfillment in doing the things we do as diligently and lovingly as we can in service of others, which is also the way to serve Him.

On February 2 (which corresponds to January 20 on the Julian Calendar) we commemorated a luminary of the monastics who served God, St. Euthymius the Great, born in 377, who came from the ancient city of Melitene (today the city of Malatya in Turkey). His very name “Euthymius”, which means “good cheer”, suggests the joy he brought to his elderly parents who received him as an answer to prayer and to all who heed his words and seek to follow his example.

His ascetic endeavours began near his native city and then from the age of 29 after a visit to Jerusalem he and another monk, Theoctistus, with whom he lived in such harmony that it was as if they had one soul, settled in a desert near Jericho. Later, always seeking stillness, he moved to another desert location near the Dead Sea. Finally he returned to the monastery of Theoctistus and founded a laura (in Ukrainian we say “lavra”, the name use for a cluster of cells or caves used by hermits) on the side of the road from Jerusalem to Jericho.

Euthymius gave much good counsel to his fellow monks, among them this: "We must never admit evil thoughts that fill us with sorrow and hatred for the place in which we live, and suggest that we go somewhere else. If someone tries to do something good in the place where he lives but fails to complete it, he should not think that he will accomplish it elsewhere. It is not the place that produces success, but faith and a firm will. A tree which is often transplanted does not bear fruit." Good advice for all who wish to be perfect as our Father in Heaven is perfect.  We must guard our minds and not grant entry to thoughts that bring sorrow and hatred.

The Saint also worked many amazing miracles and brought many to the path of light and life.  He also lent important support to the Orthodox understanding of the person of Christ as being perfect Man and perfect God which is in keeping with the revelation found in the Scriptures and which was established forever at the Fourth Ecumenical Council held in Chalcedon in 451. 

St. Euthymius reposed in the Lord in 473 in his ninety-seventh year, having prepared his brother monks for his passing, and promised to always be present with them in spirit.  May he by his prayers help us in our endeavours to find joy in submitting to the Lord in all things and so grow in the perfect freedom of those who fulfil God’s will everywhere and always.
