January 20, Saturday, Afterfeast of the Theophany. Synaxis of the Holy Glorious Prophet, Forerunner and Baptist John. Saturday after Theophany: 9:30 a.m. Liturgy.  No Vespers.

January 21, 32nd Sunday after Pentecost, after the Theophany: 9:00 a.m. Matins; 10:00 Liturgy.  Moleben’ for Ukraine on the Day of the Unification of Ukraine (Sviato Sobornosty). Afterwards – our Parish Christmas Koutia (Meal) in the Hall.  3:00 p.m. Concert in the Ukrainian Youth Association Hall to celebrate this occasion organized by the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, Montreal branch.

The Blessing of Waters on Theophany will be celebrated on Sunday, January 14, 2007, at 2:30 pm at Jacques Cartier Pier in Old Montréal (near the river at the bottom of Place Jacques Cartier & de la Commune). Responses will be sung in French, English, Greek (and other languages used by the 30+ Orthodox Parishes in greater Montreal). Dignitaries of federal, provincial and civic governments will be in attendance. The public is cordially invited to participate in this "ecological sacrament" of sanctifying all creation (in the Holy Bible used by Christians, water is "the stuff of life").

КРАСА НАРОДУ БОЖОГО

Сьогодні пропоную вийняток: я звичайно подаю роздумування про котрогось із багатьох Святих, краса яких життя проявилась усій Церкві, яка визнала їх гідними пошани і вписала їхні імена в церковний календар та літургійні книги.

Але всі Божі люди – святі! Вони ж освячені Його Благодаттю, з якою вони співпрацювали наскільки змогли, щоб підтвердити божественний образ по якому вони створені осягненням Божої подоби. Деякі здобувають цю подібність до надзвичайної міри, яка доволі явна для тих, серед яких живуть на цьому світі. Часто ця подібність стає найбільш яскравою після того, як вони завершили свою земну мандрівку.

Як буває в кожній Парафії, ми мали чудову побожну людину в нашій Громаді Свято-Покровській. Це – Григорій Кирилович Дутка, який упокоївся в Бозі 7-го грудня 2006 р. Б. Ми ж сьогодні поминаємо його в Панахиді у 40-ий день по упокоєнню його, як завжди робимо для православних Християн, нагадуючи цим, що Господь наш, Який є нашим Зразком для життя й смерті, на 40-ий день після Свого Воскресення з мертвих, вознісся на Небеса. Пропоную ці слова виголошені на його похоронні трапезі його сином Віктором.

До них додаю ще й такі зауваги: перше, що Григорій Кирилович разом з Іваном Михайловичем Цвітковим, нашим титарем, впродовж багатьох років виконували надзвичайну роботу ремонту цієї Святині, та ще за декілька тижнів перед його упокоєнням, коли я відвідав його вдома, щоб уділити йому Найсвятіші Таїнства, він подарував 1000 доларів на Фонд ремонту, цим додаючи до щедрих пожертв, яких він та його дружина Ґертруда вже дали перед тим. А також, що побожність була особливою ознакою його родини. Його батько навіть став був монахом, хоч переслідування комуністичної влади унеможливили йому прожити решта своїх днів у монастирі. А зараз подаю слова Віктора. (іюк)

У пам’ять Григорія Дутки

Дякую за прибуття на Похорон мого батька!

Вчора ви чули слова о. Куташа про працю мого батька у цій Святині, коли він навіть піднімався на риштовання маючи вже 80 літ життя! І дійсно його все життя було посвячене на працю для інших.

Його родина були вимушені тікати від комуністів в Україні і стали людьми бездержавними в Англії після другої Світової війни. Своєю працею як помічник на фермі він спромігся на хату в Брадфорді для себе й для його батьків.

І знову ж прибувши до Канади і працюючи цим разом як тесля він спромігся набути дім не тільки для себе в Монреалі але й ферму для мого дідуся й бабусі в Гемінґфорді.

Він був людиною хороброю. Він двічі ризикував власним життям допомогти іншим.

У Йоркшир збився літак Королівського літунства там, де він робив і мій батько побіг до нього, щоб рятувати пілота. Йому дали медаль за відвагу. А нещодавно сусідка намагалася вчинити самогубство по втраті її мужа запаливши себе. І знову мій батько ризикував своїм життям, щоб її врятувати.

Хоч він міг піти до школи тільки на декілька років мій батько має велику повагу до освіти. Він спромігся послати мою сестру Лізу в школу а потім і мене в університет МиҐил, і таким чином я став першим у моїй родині, що закінчив університет. Він любив слухати скрипку і любувався мистецтвом давніх Майстрів.

Мій батько був вірним членом Церкви і я вважаю, що його віра допомогла йому стати тієї чудовою людиною, якою він був.

Ще раз дякую за прибуття сьогодні.

THE BEAUTY OF GOD’S PEOPLE

I have made an exception for today’s offering.  I usually write about one of the many Saints the loveliness of whose lives has been manifest to the Church which declared them worthy of veneration and thus placed them on the Church Calendar and the liturgical books. 

Yet all of God’s people are holy, sanctified by His Grace with which they co-operated, as well as they were able to manage, to confirm the divine image in which they were created by acquiring the divine likeness. Some achieve it to a marked degree which is quite apparent to those among whom they live upon the earth. In many such cases this likeness becomes most clearly apparent after they have completed their earthly sojourn.

As with all Parishes, we had a wonderful godly man in this Hromada of Sviata Pokrova.  His name was Grycko (official transliteration in Latin characters from his documents of the Ukrainian diminutive “Hryts’ko” – from “Hryhoriy” i.e. Gregory) Dutka. He reposed in the Lord on December 7, 2006, and today we commemorate him in a Panakhyda on the 40^th day of  his repose (as we always do for Orthodox Christians, to remind us that our Lord, Who is our Model for living and dying, ascended to Heaven 40 days after His resurrection from the dead).  I offer this tribute expressed at his memorial meal by Victor Dutka, his son.

I would add to it the following notes: first that Grycko, together with Ivan Zwetkow, our “tytar”, for many years have done the most amazing work of repairing and maintaining this Temple and, a few weeks before his repose when I visited him at home to bring him the Holy Mysteries, gave $1000 to the repair fund, adding thereby to the generous donations he and his wife Gertrude have already given. And, second, that godliness was characteristic in his family: his father even became a monk, although communist persecution made it impossible for him to live out his days in a monastery.  And now for Victor’s words. In Memoriam Grycko Dudka

Thank you for coming to my father’s funeral.

Yesterday you heard Father Kutash talk about my father’s work on the church, even climbing on scaffolding when 80 years old. Indeed, his whole life has been spent working for others.

His family were forced to flee the communists in Ukraine and ended up as displaced persons after World War II in England. After working as a farm labourer he was able to afford a house in Bradford for himself and his parents.

Again, after arriving in Canada and now working as a carpenter, they were able to not only buy a house in Montreal, but also a farm for my grandparents in Hemmingford.

He was also a brave man. Twice during his life he risked personal injury to save others.

In Yorkshire, an RAF plane crashed nearby where he was working and my father ran to the plane to help the pilot. He was given a medal for his bravery. More recently, a neighbor tried to commit suicide after the death of her husband by setting herself on fire. Again, my father risked himself to save another.

Even though he could only attend a few years of school, my father has a great respect for learning and education. My father put my sister, Liza, through school, and then myself through McGill, helping me become the first person in my family to attend university. He loved to listen to violin music and enjoyed the paintings of the old Masters.

My father was a faithful member of the Church and I believe that his faith helped him become the fine man that he was.
