«(Він) бажав бачити Ісуса, хто він»

Св. Апостол Закхей (1-ше століття)

Православний рік складається з коліс часу, які спів діють з іншими колесами. Перше велике колесо основане на рух планети Земля навколо сонця – сонячний календар. У цьому колесі всі нерухомі свята, а між ними головніші – великі Господські празники такі як Різдво та Богоявлення, великі Богородичні празники та празники більш відомих Святих. Друге колесо основане на рухові місяця навколо Землі – місячний календар. Це колесо основане на Святі із Свят – на Воскресенню Господа нашого Ісуса Христа. Воно пов’язане з місячним колесом Єврейської громади бо ж всі православні завжди святкують Свято Воскресення Господнього в першу неділю після повного місяця після весняного рівнодення після єврейського Свята Пасхи.

Ми готуємося до цього Свята постом – Святи Великим Постом, який триває 40 днів не спомин Посту Господнього у пустині перед початком Його земного служіння, а потім завершується постом Страсного Тижня. Готуємося і до Великого Посту в неділі, які попереджують його, які пригадують нам чому саме ми постимо і приборкуємо надмірні вимоги свого я. Це приготування починається сьогодні в Неділю, коли ми читаємо Євангелію про короткого збирача податків, митаря Закхея (Луки 19:1-10).

У нього була чеснота, яку не часто уважають за чесноту. Справді її часто уважають небажаною та небезпечною. Вона - допитливість!  Євангеліст Лука каже про Закхея, що «він бажав бачити Ісуса, хто він». Це не була просто даремна допитливість. Закхея так цікавився цим Мужем, про Якого всі говорили, що він ризикував костями й життям, вилізши на дерево біля дороги, якою мав проходити Ісус, щоб хоч глянути на Нього. Він знав, що інакше йому б це не вдалося, бо ж був він коротким (як Апостол Павло, якого ім’я після навернення до Христа - «Paulus» - як раз має значіння «короткий»).  І не було жодної надії, щоб натовп, який переважно оточував Ісуса,  пропустив його побачити Владику.

Як видно це бажання було натхнене Духом Святим бо ж Господь побачив Закхея на дереві, назвав його по імені і провідав його дім. Заклей дорого заплатив за свою допитливість. Його зустріч з Ісусом призвела до того, що він віддав та роздав величезні суми грошей, яких здобув нечесно. Але виграв він на багато більше чим віддав. Ісус сказав про нього: «Сьогодні спасіння прийшло цьому домові».  А життя Закхея після цієї зустрічі призвела до залучення його і в сонячний церковний календар під назвою «Апостола» - 20-го квітня на юліанському календарі, що відповідає 3-му травня на григоріанському календарі. Передання каже, що він став Єпископом в Кесарії Палестинській, де він і впокоївся.

Нехай і ми будемо сповнені святою допитливістю пізнати Ісуса і Друзів Його. Нехай і ми знайдемо відвагу діяти на підставі наших винаходів, навертаючись до Господа все більше та більше у всьому, що кажемо і всьому, що робимо. (іюк)

THE BEAUTY OF THE SAINTS

“He sought to see who Jesus was”

Holy Apostle Zaccheus (1^st century)

The Orthodox year is composed of wheels of time interacting with other wheels.  One great wheel is the wheel which is based on the movement of the earth around the sun – the solar calendar.  This wheel contains the immovable commemorations – chief among them the great Feasts of our Lord, such as Nativity and Theophany, of our Lady and of the more renowned Saints.  Another wheel is based on the movement of the moon around the earth – the lunar calendar.  This wheel is founded upon the Feast of Feasts – the Resurrection of our Lord.  It is linked to the lunar wheel of the Jewish community for the Feast of the Resurrection is always celebrated by all the Orthodox on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox after the Jewish Feast of Passover.

We prepare for this Feast by fasting – the Great Fast which goes on for 40 days in commemoration of the Lord’s Fast in the wilderness prior to His messianic ministry, followed by the fast of the Passion Week.  We also prepare for the Great Fast in the Sundays which precede it – to remind us of the purpose of our fasting and self-sacrifice.  That preparation begins today on the Sunday when we read the Gospel about the short tax-collector Zaccheus (Luke 19:1-10).

His was a virtue that is not often thought of as such – in fact it is often considered to be somewhat a nuisance, annoying and not infrequently dangerous.  It is curiosity!  The Evangelist Luke says of Zaccheus “he sought to see who Jesus was”.  It was not simply idle curiosity.  So profound was the tax-collector’s curiosity about the Man of Whom everyone was talking that he risked life and limb by climbing up a tree where Jesus would be passing by. This was so He could at least catch a glimpse of him, realizing that this would normally not be possible since he was short (like the Apostle Paul, whose name after his conversion to Christ, “Paulus”, meant “short”) and it was highly unlikely that the crowd which usually followed and surrounded Jesus would let him through to see the Master.

This longing was inspired by the Holy Spirit, for our Lord saw Zaccheus in the tree, called him by name and visited his home.  Zaccheus paid dearly for his curiosity. His encounter with Jesus led him to renounce his way of life and restore and give away huge amounts of money that he had gained by corruption.  But he won much more than he gave away.  Jesus said of him: “Today salvation is come to this house”.  And Zaccheus’ subsequent life caused him to be eventually venerated as an Apostle (April 20 on the Julian Calendar which is May 3 on the Gregorian Calendar). Tradition says that he became Bishop of Caesarea in Palestine where he reposed in peace.

May we too be filled with holy curiosity to know Jesus and His friends.  May we too find the courage to act upon our discoveries by turning ever more sincerely to the Lord in all that we say and do. (igk)
