Orthodox Christian Women (OCW) is an Orthodox women’s fellowship based in Montreal. Every year, they host a conference. This year, they have invited Gayle Woloschak, a member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the U.S.A., radiation oncologist and author of numerous books and articles on science and religion. Men are also welcome at the conference. The title is Orthodoxy Meets the Biological Revolution.  «Господи, як Ти бажаєш і як Ти знаєш, помилуй мене.”

Преподобний Макарій Великий Єгипецький

Цей чудовий Святець, якого пам’ять святкуємо 1-го лютого (це 19-го січня на юліанському календарі), народився під кінець 3-го століття в селі Шабшір в Єгипті. По велінню його батьків він одружився але його дружина упокоїлась за кілька днів після шлюбу. Після її похорону Макарій (якого ім’я означає «благословенний») вирішив стати монахом. Він постійно пам’ятав про смерть і це його спонукувало молитися і постити. Він доглянув своїх батьків доки й вони упокоїлись а тоді пішов до Старця (духовного Отця), що жив недалеко звідти у пустині. Від нього навчився додавати спостережливість до посту й молитву а також, як плести кошики. Макарій поселився в келії біля свого духовного Отця.

Одного дня прибув місцевий Єпископ і висвятив Макарія проти його бажання. Таке встрявання в тишину його життя дуже потурбували монаха і він стаємно вибрався в інше місце. Він відганяв наступ диявола молитвою і Знаменем Хреста. Деякі люди оклеветали Святого мовляв він звів жінку з сусіднього села і він переніс наклепи з великою смиренністю. Без жодного нарікання він висилав гроші, які одержував за плетені кошики на допомогу вагітної жінки. Коли вона на останку виявила ім’я справжнього батька дитини її батьки хотілм перепросити Святого. Та хоч він спокійно переносив наклепи Макарій уникав похвалу і він втік перед тим, як вони дійшли до нього та поселився на горі Нітрії в пустині Фаран.

Після трьох років у пустині Макарій подався до Св. Антонія Великого, Батька Єгипецького монашества і став його відданим учнем та послідовником. Після довгого часу з ним за благословенням Антонія він подався до монастиря Скит на півночі Єгипту. Він відбивав чимало наступів демонів. Одного разу, коли він ніс пальмові листки для плетення кошиків його зустрів біс на шляху і намагався безуспішно вдарити його косою. Він викрикнув: «Макарію, я дуже мучуся через тебе, бо не можу тебе подолати. Я роблю все, що ти. Ти постиш, а я не їм нічого. Ти пильнуєш, а я ніколи не сплю. Тільки в одному ти мене перевищуєш: у смиренності».

Коли йому сповнилося 40 літ Макарія обрали головою монахів, що жили в пустині Скит. Він далі виявляв глибоку смиренність. Одного разу Святий Отець натрапив на злодія, що накладав його ж речі на осля біля його келії. Макарій почав допомагати йому прив’язувати вантаж, не виявляючи, що це – його речі краде злодій. Смиренність і лагідність монаха Макарія змінювала людські душі. Він казав: «Шкідливе слово перетворює добре на зле, але добре слово перетворює зле на добре!» Він також казав: «Для молитва не треба багато слів. Просто треба казати: ‘Господи, як Ти бажаєш і як Ти знаєш, помилуй мене!’»

Макарій прожив понад 90 літ і упокоївся в Бозі. Його Святі Мощі спочивають у м. Амалфі в Італії. За його молитвами нехай навчимося й ми кохати смиренність, молитву та піст. (іюк)

THE BEAUTY OF THE SAINTS

“Lord, as You will and as You know, have mercy on me.”

Saint Macarius the Great of Egypt

This wonderful Saint whose memory we celebrate on February 1 (which is January 19 on the Julian Calendar) was born at the end of the third century in the village of Shabsheer in Egypt. As his parents wished he married but was widowed a few days later. After his wife’s funeral Macarius (whose name means “blessed”) decided to become a monk. The memory of death was always with him, moving him to pray and fast.  He took care of his parents until they reposed and then went to a “staretz” (spiritual elder) who lived in the desert nearby. From him he learned to add watchfulness to his fasting and praying. He also learned how to weave baskets. Macarius settled into a cell near his elder.

The local bishop arrived one day and ordained him against his will. St. Macarius was overwhelmed by this disturbance of his silence, and so fled secretly to another place. He repelled the attacks of the devil with prayer and the Sign of the Cross. Some people slandered the saint, accusing him of seducing a woman from a nearby village and he endured the slander with great humility. Without a murmur, he sent the money that he got for his baskets for the support of the pregnant woman. Finally the woman revealed the name of the real father. When her parents found out the truth, they were astonished and intended to go to the saint to ask forgiveness. But although he willingly accepted dishonour, he shunned praise and so fled before they were able to reach him, settling on Mt. Nitria in the Pharan desert.

After three years, Macarius went to St. Anthony the Great, Father of Egyptian monasticism and became his devoted disciple and follower. After a long time he went off to the Skete monastery (in the northwest part of Egypt. He repelled many demonic attacks. Once, he was carrying palm branches for weaving baskets, and a demon met him on the way and tried unsuccessfully to strike him with a sickle. He cried out: "Macarius, I suffer great anguish from you because I am unable to vanquish you. I do everything that you do. You fast, and I eat nothing at all. You keep vigil, and I never sleep. You surpass me only in one thing: humility."

At the age of forty, Macarius was made the head of the monks living in the desert of Skete. He continued to preserve his unusual humility. One time the holy abba caught a thief loading his things on a donkey standing near the cell. Without saying that he was the owner of these things, the monk began to help tie up the load. The meekness and humility of the monk transformed human souls. "A harmful word," said Abba Macarius, "makes good things bad, but a good word makes bad things good." He also said: "Prayer does not require many words. It is needful to say only, "Lord, as You will and as You know, have mercy on me.”

Macarius lived past the age of ninety and reposed in peace. His holy relics are in the city of Amalfi, Italy.  Through his prayers may we too learn how to love humility, prayer and fasting. (igk)
