Св. Новомученик Володимир, Митрополит Київський і Галицький

Другий nур виборів президента суверенної України в неділю 7-го лютого (це -25-го січня за юліанським календарем) 2010 р. відбувається в день, коли ми поминаємо першого Священномученика безбожного большевицького гоніння га Церкву, Св. Володимира, Митрополита Київського і Галицького, який прийняв мучеництво в цей день у 1918 р.
Митрополит Володимир народився Василем Никифоровичем Богоявленьским у Тамбові в Росії 1-го січня 1848. Його батько також був Священиком, і його також забили. Він закінчив Київську Богословську семінарію в 1874 р. і викладав у семінарії в Тамбові 7 літ. Його дружина впокоїлася 1886 р., а скоро після того їхня одинока дитина. За традицією, о. Василь тоді став ченцем і прийняв ім’я Володимир. По його талантами та освітою він був відповідний кандидат на Єпископа і він і послужив відмінно на цьому пості від 1888 р. аж до його мученицької смерті.
Він очолював, між іншим, Єпархії Московську та Санкт-Петербурзьку. З останньої його послали на Київську за наказом царя, тому що він був висловив невдоволення зі спірним монахом Григорієм Распутіном. На Соборі Церкви всієї Росії, що відбувся в 1917 р. це Митрополит Володимир оголосив вибір на Патріарха Св. Тихона..
Служіння Митрополита Володимира в Києві було дуже важким. Це був час зросту руху за суверенність в Україні і це включало бажання мати Церкву, яка була б незалежна від Патріярхату Московського.
Як Єпископ, Св. Володимир не лише виконував свої обов’язки як предстоятеля у Богослужіннях. Він також займався убогими та намагався давати освіту своїй пастві. Він також старався допомогти алкоголікам осягнути тверезість.
Нарешті у ніч 25-го січня (за юліанським календарем) його схопили 5 вояків і один матрос, які мучили його і повели його на розстріл. Його келійник підбіг до нього, щоб отримати його останнє благословення. Не зважаючи на грубість матроса, який відштовхнув цього чоловіка, який називався Пилип, зі словами: «Досить поклоніння цим кровопійцям», Митрополит поблагословив його і сказав «Прощай, Пилипе» а потім спокійно пішов на місце страти.
Його тіло понесли ченці в Михайлівський Собор Лаври по тому, як деякі жінки сказали їм, де його можна знайти. Його офіційно прославила в ряди Святих Церква Росії в р. 1992.
На вечір перед другим туром виборів, одна з кандидатів, Юлія Тимошенко, промовляючи на великому зібранні на Молитву на площі перед старинним Собором Св. Софії у Києві, попросила прощення для себе і для всіх урядів України за прогріхи вчинені вільно і невільно. Цей дуже відповідний Християнський жест можемо розуміти, як такий що відноситься до всіх володарів на цій багатостраждальній землі та й до всіх її людей.
У цей день також припадає спомин про Страшний Суд, який нам пригадує і про те, що Богові відомі всі прогріхи Його дітей та що прийде день розплати і нарешті назавжди закінчиться всяке зло, яке є відхиленням від добра. Належиться нам усім поєднатися серцем і розумом у Молитві, якою Першоієрарх Української Православної Церкви Київського Патріярхату, Філарет, закінчив свій виступ на зібранні – «Отче наш», в якому чуємо життєдайній слова: «Прости нам провини наші, як і ми прощаємо винуватцям нашим». St. Volodymyr, Metropolitan of Kyiv and Halych

The run-off election of the President of sovereign Ukraine on Sunday, February 7 (which is January 25 on the Julian Calendar), 2010, falls on the day we commemorate the first Hieromartyr of the atheistic Bolshevik persecution of the Church, St. Volodymyr, Metropolitan of Kyiv and Halych, who was martyred this day in 1918.
Metropolitan Volodymyr was born Vasyliy Nykyforovych Bohoyavlenskyy in Tambov, Russia, on January 1, 1848, His father, too, was a priest who was also murdered. He graduated from the Kyiv Theological Seminary in 1874 and taught at the Seminary in Tambov for 7 years. His wife died in 1886 and their only child shortly thereafter. As was customary, Fr. Vasyliy then became a monk receiving the name Volodymyr. His talents and erudition also made him a fitting candidate for bishop and he served in this rank with great distinction from 1888 right up until his death by martyrdom.
Among the dioceses he led were those of Moscow and St. Petersburg. He was sent to Kyiv from the last one by order of the Tsar since he had expressed disapproval of the controversial monk, Grigoriy Rasputin. At the Sobor of the Church of Russia held in Moscow in 1917 it was Metropolitan Volodymyr who announced the election to the Patriarchate of St. Tikhon.
Metropolitan Volodymyr’s ministry in Kyiv was very difficult. It was the time of the growth of the sovereignist movement in Ukraine which included the desire for a Church independent of the Moscow Patriarchate.
As a Bishop, St. Volodymyr did not merely fulfill his duties as the chief celebrant of Divine Services. He also concerned himself with the poor as well as with the education of his flock. He also sought to help alcoholics find their way to sobriety.
Finally on the night of January 25 (Julian Calendar) he was seized by 5 soldiers and a sailor, tortured and led away to be shot. His cell attendant rushed up to get his final blessing. In spite of the rudeness of the sailor who shoved aside the man, whose name was Philip, with the words: “Enough bowing to these blood-drinkers”, the Metropolitan blessed him saying “Good-bye, Philip” and calmly walked to his place of execution.
His body was taken by the monks into the St. Michael Sobor of the Lavra, after some women told them where to find it. He was formally canonized by the Church of Russia in 1992.
On the eve of the run-off election one of the candidates, Yuliya Tymoshenko, speaking at a huge gathering for prayer on the plaza before the ancient Cathedral of Svyata Sophia in Kyiv, asked for forgiveness for herself and for all the governments of Ukraine for the wrongs done voluntarily and involuntarily. This singularly appropriate Christian gesture may be viewed as extending to all the rulers of this much-suffering land as well as to all its people.
Today is also the Sunday of the Last Judgment, which reminds us, both that God is very much aware of all the wrongs that His children do, and that there will come a reckoning and a decisive end shall be put to all evil, which is a departure from that which is good. It would be well for us all to join with all our hearts and minds in the prayer with which the primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Kyiv Patriarchate) Filaret closed his address – the “Our Father” in which we hear the life-giving words: “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” Amen.
