THE BEAUTY OF THE SAINTS

Hieromartyr Blaise the Bishop of Sebaste

«Ти змагався за Віру аж до пролиття своєї крови» (Тропар Святому).

На 24-го лютого (це 11-го лютого за юліанським календарем) ми святкуємо пам’ять Святого, якого любили й звірі і люди, Священомученика Власія, Єпископа Севастійського. Він служив своїй пастві за володіння Римських імператорів Діоклетіяна (284-305) та Лицинія (307-324), які люто переслідували Християн.

Деякі Християни уникали страшне переслідування тим, що ховалися у запущених, диких місцях. Так і Св. Власій сховався на горі Аргей, де проживав у печері. Дикі звірі підходили до нього і чекали доки Святець закінчить свої Молитви і тоді він їх благословляв. Він також зцілював їх, накладаючи свої руки на них.

Його місце сховання таки знайшли слуги губернатора, і той наказав арештувати його. Св. Власій подякував Богові за новий виклик і пішов з вояками. По дорозі до губернатора він зцілював недужих і творив інші чуда. Бідна вдова поскаржилась йому про те, що вовк схопив її єдину власність, малу свинку. Владика всміхнувся і сказав: «Не журися, твою свинку повернуть». На здивування всіх так і сталось – прибіг вовк і повернув її схоплену свинку без ушкодження.

Коли Владика сказав губернаторові, що ідоли яким він поклонявся – це демони, то його люто били й мучили. Сімох жінок, які його підтримували в його стражданнях теж мучили і відсікли їм голови. Одна з них доручили йому своїх малих синів, просячи щоб він допоміг їм знайти Царство Небесне.

Губернатор наказав вкинути Власія в озеро, а Святець зробив знак Хреста і ступав по воді неначе по сухій землі. Тоді він покликав язичників прийти до нього прикликаючи до помочі своїх так званих богів. З почоту губернатора 68 чоловік відгукнулися і зразу потонули. А Св. Власій повернувся до берега. Губернатор сильно розлютився через втрату своїх слуг і наказав зразу відсікти голови Владики та двох хлопців, які були з ним. Святий Мученик помолився за світ перед своєю смертю а головно за тих, що шануватимуть його пам’ять. Було це близько року 316-го.

Дякуємо Богові за пам’ять Святих, які своєю дружністю зі звірами, як і з людьми пригадують нам про той Рай, якого ми втратили через непослух першого Адама та знову здобули через послух аж до смерти Другого Адама, Господа, Бога і Спаса нашого Ісуса Христа. (іюк)

 

“Thou didst contest for the Faith even unto blood” (Troparion of the Saint)

On February 24 (which is February 11 on the Julian Calendar) we celebrate the memory of a Saint beloved by humans and animals, the Hieromartyr Blaise (Blasius), Bishop of Sebaste. He ministered to his flock during the reign of the Roman emperors Diocletian (284-305) and Licinius (307-324), who were fierce persecutors of Christians.

When the persecution became most pronounced many Christians hid themselves in desolate and solitary places. St. Blaise hid on Mount Argeos, where he lived in a cave. Wild beasts would come up to him and wait until the Saint finished his prayer when he would bless them. He would also heal them by laying his hands upon them.

His hiding place was at last discovered by the servants of the governor who gave orders to arrest him. Glorifying God for this challenge, St. Blaise followed the soldiers. Along the way to the governor’s he healed the sick and worked other miracles. A destitute widow complained to him that a wolf had carried off a small pig, her only possession. The Bishop smiled and said to her: "Do not weep, your pig will be returned to you...." To everyone’s amazement, the wolf soon came running back and returned his prey unharmed.

When the saintly Bishop told the governor that the idols he worshipped were demons, he was beaten and tortured. Seven women who supported him in his trials were also tortured and beheaded. One of them entrusted her two young sons to his care, asking him to help them attain the Kingdom of Heaven.

The governor ordered that Blaise be thrown into a lake. The Saint made the Sign of the Cross and walked upon it as though upon dry land. Then he challenged the pagans to come to him calling upon their so-called gods. Sixty-eight men of the governor's retinue responded to the challenge and were drowned. St. Blaise returned to shore. The governor was furious at this loss of his men and ordered that the saintly Bishop and his two charges, the young boys entrusted to him, be beheaded at once. Before his death, the holy Martyr prayed for the whole world, and especially for those honouring his memory. This occurred in about the year 316.

We thank God for the memory of Saints, who by their friendship with animals as well as men and women, remind us of the Paradise which we lost through the disobedience of the first Adam and regained through the obedience unto death of the Second, our Blessed Lord, God and Saviour Jesus Christ.
